How Sxxy1992 (Stella) got his (her) "Lunch" (groove) back!!! (Blown fuse Fixed!)

Ok, chill'ins, the issue with the R&L Blown fuses has been solved! Problem was all 5 wires that crossed over the lip if the frame that holds the jack inside the trunk were indeed all cut from the sharp edge of that lip. Y'all need to check yours and let me know if you have your wiring draped over that lip also, ok??? Anyway, I ended up removing the entire antenna assembly from the car and gained access to the small wiring harness that powers it. Indeed the wires had cuts in them so taped each one individually and then taped all 5 wires together. And to avoid anybody saying, "the only thing more stupid than the way they were placed in the first place would be to repair them and then drape them across the lip again, just to keep it original issue!" I thought it through a little bit and decided to place it forward of the lip and avoid the problem reoccurring altogether. Sweet!! Problem solved! Am including a few pictures so you can see what I was up against. Anymore information being desired, you can ask. I'll surely tell....... enjoy!

this is how the general area looks when you move away the trim, etc, etc. and remove the antenna assembly from inside the fender. The wiring plug and all hopefully, is obvious.

here is how I taped the wires individually so they will not rub amongst themselves.

And finally, the fuse that you would pull to work on all this stuff before your car "goes on drugs". Any questions????

If you need any help at all, give me a shout. Having freshly pulled the whole thing out and held it in my hand, I'm just almost a qualified sturgeon. ha! But I may be able to help you out in some way.

ha ha.. That has to be the most creative thread title ever!!!

Nice write-up! Thanks for sharing.
If you'd like.. I can host the photos and edit your post to include all of them in one post... But really.. the way you did it was just fine.

I'll be adding this to the 'vert Facts/FAQ's sticky. Nice work!! Thanks for sharing this with all of us!

Ooh!! Tell me what you did to get your antenna motor assembly out! My antenna broke and some of the plastic feeder is stuck in there...I really want to fix it but I hate taking it somewhere to be fixed.

I'll tell you what. I just got off of working all night and need a few hours of sleep and then I'll see about getting you a little bit of step-by-step. Ok? It is really not very difficult at all. You have a 92 convert?

You are most welcome and thanks for feeling this was worthy of a sticky. You are free to configure it any way you like. Might be interesting to see another version that is aligned like the rest. And I may learn how to put all the pics in an order. thanks again, and it was my pleasure.

Sure, get some sleep I got a 93 vert, but they're essentially the same I assume (judging from the picture of your trunk/atennna assembly it's all the same).

Yes, that's right. looks like we are driving the same animal.
that being known, here's some steps to get it out where you can hold it in your hand.
A. You should probably remove the negative terminal of your battery or pull the fuse for the antenna.
1. Remove carpeting from the left side of the trunk area. just fold it over is fine.
2. put a screwdriver blade under 2 plastic poprivets that hold the plastic side trim on the left side of the trunk inside. that way you can fold it around clockwise and expose the metal sidewall of the trunk, jack access, bolts, etc. You can use a screwdriver and just pop them out. they are a hinged sort of thing that stays put but comes out fairly easily.
3. Remove the jack. Look in that area and see if you have wiring that is draped over the forward lip of the jack holder. If so, fix that problem later on also.
4. There are 3 bolts in a triangular pattern to remove from inside the trunk for the jack holder. Remove the jack holder.
5. Just inside the cubby hole for the jack and above, you will feel the connection for the antenna wire. It is only about 12"long and curls up to the antenna itself. You need to disconnect it there. Take the main wire now and where it is attached to the metal wall of the car there is a white poprivet sticking from the inside to the trunk space itself. You will see just a little white pop sticking thru. Pinch it together and pop it back into the cubby hole as you will probably have to pull it out from the main wiring of the antenna. I'm just saying pull it inside the main trunk area to free up all the wiring of the antenna it may be threaded thru. And then just let it hang there as shown in the picture. Make sense?
6. Now there is a cap (metal) ring that screw on to the top of the antenna that keeps it tight to the car itself. It has 2 tiny holes on either side of the ring. I used the ends of snapring pliars and put them into the holes and very gingerly assisted the tool in turning counterclockwise and helping it ever so gently to turn and not breaking the ends of your snapring pliars. It will begin to move and just screws off. Put it to the side.
7. Now remove the plastic "bonnet" affair that is on top of the car above the antenna. It just lifts off but you should mark it as far as location (pencil mark facing to the front of the car, etc.)
8. Now the only thing holding the antenna inside the car are 2 shiny bolts forward of the 3 you removed for the jack holder. Remove these bolts and be holding onto the main unit with your left hand inside the cubby hole area as you are removing the last bolt. It will come away from the wall easily and will be in your hand. Now it is up to you how to get it out from that area. On the bottom of the unit there is about 15" of rubber tubing and I believe the nylon tail from the antenna draws up and retracts inside that tube. Just so you know that it is there. It just needs to be placed back along the bottom of the cubby hole so the tubing is free and clear and able to do its thing.
9. I believe I dropped the unit straight down deep into the cubby hole and there was more space to just snake it out into the trunk. You are coming out of the jack access hole, you understand. It is best to tape the plastic trim stuff to the tailgate so it won't be in your way. Should work ok. Just somehow get the motor and antenna combo out of the inner fender without ripping the wiring from the unit. Remove the wiring after you get it out.
10. Now that it is out, on the larger electrical plug, push in on a small lever of the plug and the plug will pull right out. I used a small bit of silicone to coat parts of the plug for reinstalling and if I need to remove it again. Then remove the little 1-wire electric plug. Next and last, push the tines of a large tan plastic clip to the sides and remove the shaft of the antenna from this clip that is attached to the smaller wire loom. Put the plugs to the side and you have the antenna and motor combo in the palm of your hand.
Just reverse the process exactly and attach the power at the finish.
Simple as that. I sure hope this helps you and let me know if things go bad.
