As I promised, I called my machinist today and I have a final quote on the plates...
Essentially what I need to make sure this is going to work smoothly, is 2 people to pre-pay for the protos so I can get everything I need to start production of a few. With 2 people prepaying..
I am offering the plate for $250 as a prototype, the production will be probably $275 or $300.
The plate is a 1/4 in piece of A36 structural steel. Instead of having counter-bored bolts, machining bellhousings or using thick spacers, this allows all stock parts to be used. On my car, I have a N/A trans with my plate, and the small 1/4 in spacer that is behind the VH flexplate, which works with the OEM Z32 flywheel bolts. Everything works exactly as it should..
The plate has 90° countersinks on both sides. The plate is mounted to the engine using the top 4 bolts that are counter-sunk using M10 bolts. On the other side, studs are welded into the plate (actually M10 countersunk screws that are welded in place), so that once the plate is in place on the engine, the transmission simply slides over the studs and lines up perfectly. Provisions for the starter are made, however one has to cut a small piece off the block where the Q45 starter mounted. This is well covered in previous posts.
You might be thinking that the stock VH45 bolts are M14s. I have sourced via McMaster-Carr some threaded inserts. They are essentially like heli-coils in that they thread into the M14 hole and are threaded on the inside to result in an M10 thread pattern internally. Essentially, once these are installed they allow the use of M10 x 1.5 bolts, which are easier to source. Before, I had M14 x 1.5 bolts custom machined, and at this time that is not a cost effective option.
For those interested in the prototypes, you will be given all of the necessary hardware to mount the engine to the transmission. I do not have the provisions to weld in the screws on the back side (the studs that mount the trans to the plate), so that is the only other thing you will have to do.
Any interest?
