There are some changes to the blacktop harness in comparison to the redtop harness. I'm not 100% sure on the pinout changes near the ECU but I am aware of some.

Someone else will chime in.

Pinout changes on the ECU plug? I didn't think there were any since I've successfully ran S13 blacktop ECUs on redtop harnesses

I did some more research, if its a 96-99 S13 Blacktop J5 ECU a few pins changed. If it is 91-95 S13 Blacktop E5 or E6(Auto) ECU than you're good to go.

If you have the J5 ECU, Ill do the research for you, I like helping people...haha. Im sure its minimal pins and maybe 3-5 solder joints.

Correct, although I've never heard of an E6 ECU. Your Redtop harness will work with the J2 / J3 / E4 / E5 without any changes to the ECU pinout. These ECUs were found in S13s ranging from 1991 to 1996. The Type-X S13 Blacktop used the J4 and J5 ECU which, of course, have a slightly different ECU pinout than the non Type Xs.

Here are the ECU pinout differences-

Changes to other connectors were also made:

I'm assuming your friend has the wire harness for the early S13 Blacktop (non TypeX), as the TypeXs are harder to come across.

Here is a link to the pinouts for both the J2/J3/E4/E5 and J4/J5 ECUs. To make sure which harness your friend has you can simple compare the wiring coloring to that of the pinouts.

I have a J4 ECU and had to repin about 6 wires. It's really easy to do, just need a little patience. If you have the J4 or J5 ecu with a different harness you will have to repin or it wont even start.
