Got a call from the Dad of one of our Moderators (Neal from the Skyline / GTR Forum), who lives in Illinois and found a '63 Impala for sale in my area.

Neal asked if I'd go have a peek at it, and it's cool as hell. Mark pulled the trigger, and today I went to pick it up for him to store until it can be shipped to IL.

All complete and all original except...

Drivetrain swap from a '96 Impala SS.

Thing sounds like pure evil, and gets the hell outta the way, even at 5,000+ lbs.

It's gonna be a cool project, so hopefully Mark (and Neal) will keep us updated on the progress.

Will do - I'll shoot some more pics tomorrow.

Man, I'm down from 200 (what I weighed at Nashville in 2007) to 160. I need a damn cook.

Wagons ARE badass. Mostly because everyone thinks they're just grocery getters and nothing more. That is until one outruns your Yamaha R1.

AWESOME Impala. Needs ratrod slammage on whitewalls with a side-exit exhaust and a woodgrain wheel though.

And modern LT1 powertrain! Win!

Why can't I find stuff like this?

Drive train form a 96 Impala?

Why would some one want to do that to such a beauty, They should have used a 454 SD.

Why? B/c the Lt1 can make incredible power and still retain great daily driveable manners.

FYI -- 454 SD would be a Pontiac. Chevy used engine codes like Ls5, Ls6...

Yea I know 400 CI and 454 and 455 are all Pontiac motors, but I meant why make a classic car a OBD2 car?

Should have went with another motor or at very least a 1994 LT1, But from what I have read they barely make 300 HP/TQ

Should have put a VH in there.

No, that's wrong on both counts. The 454 is a Chevy motor. The 455 was a Pontiac motor.

And tons of Chevy motors are and were referred to by their CID count. 396, 427, 454, 409...("Giddy-up 409") The "LS" series is ONE series of small-block (which the 454 is not) motors. The internal codes were just another name for them, but it wasn't until the LT-series that those codes really began replacing the CID reference as the common name of the motor, long after the use of cubic INCH displacement had yielded way to metric measurements.

The 454 big block Chevy of the '70s was referred to as an LS6. But that was the only "LS" designation motor before 1997. You rarely hear it referred to as the LS6, either way. Everyone just calls it a 454.

Yeah I realized that right after I posted, but just didn't edit it. For the record, there is no 454 sd that I am aware of.

Actually that isn't true.... tons of Chevy engines had codes. Everything from LT1 to L-79 to LS6 to ZL1 to etc. It may not have always been used in common parlance as much as it would be now, but it was still there on many of the engines. And often it was used in parlance because in the 60s and 70s most of the engines that were coded referred to specific engines that were usually higher output than the regular counterparts. You even say it yourself below. They also made an LS5 454. The LS didn't refer to any small block until about 1998... IIRC some have suggested they revived the LS nameplate with the intent of bringing back some nostalgia for the old LS big blocks.

Everyone who doesn't know the difference calls it "just a 454." The LS6 was a special engine option of limited production. I've heard of stock examples dynoing at over 600hp, some say it is even higher. The engine was rated by Chevy at 450hp, the most of any Chevrolet car in the day. They were available only in Chevelles and Corvettes, and only for one year. By comparision, an LS5 454 was rated at 360hp, almost 100 less. Most people talking about the LS6 will call it LS6, as it is not "just a 454." That is like calling a Z11 or a ZL1 just another big block.
