Yeah I realized that right after I posted, but just didn't edit it. For the record, there is no 454 sd that I am aware of.

The internal codes were just another name for them, but it wasn't until the LT-series that those codes really began replacing the CID reference as the common name of the motor, long after the use of cubic INCH displacement had yielded way to metric measurements.
Actually that isn't true.... tons of Chevy engines had codes. Everything from LT1 to L-79 to LS6 to ZL1 to etc. It may not have always been used in common parlance as much as it would be now, but it was still there on many of the engines. And often it was used in parlance because in the 60s and 70s most of the engines that were coded referred to specific engines that were usually higher output than the regular counterparts. You even say it yourself below. They also made an LS5 454. The LS didn't refer to any small block until about 1998... IIRC some have suggested they revived the LS nameplate with the intent of bringing back some nostalgia for the old LS big blocks.

Everyone who doesn't know the difference calls it "just a 454." The LS6 was a special engine option of limited production. I've heard of stock examples dynoing at over 600hp, some say it is even higher. The engine was rated by Chevy at 450hp, the most of any Chevrolet car in the day. They were available only in Chevelles and Corvettes, and only for one year. By comparision, an LS5 454 was rated at 360hp, almost 100 less. Most people talking about the LS6 will call it LS6, as it is not "just a 454." That is like calling a Z11 or a ZL1 just another big block.
