A couple of days ago my service engine soon light came on, and i noticed that there was no check engine light in the dash (or i missed it). Is the service engine soon light actually the check engine light??? Or it is just a light set on a timer to get your car fixed at regular times? I have an 02 maxima se if this helps anybody. I Appreciate the help guys!

Yes. Here is how you can pull the code(s) yourself if you need to. Please post if you have any problems when performing this procedure. I do not know for sure that this procedure works. See post #9 for more information.

Make sure engine is off, and gas pedal is completely released.Turn the key to the “Ignition” position (but do not engage the starter), and wait 3 secondsPress the gas pedal all the way to the floor, then release completely - Repeat this process 5 times in 5 seconds.Wait 7 seconds, then press the gas pedal all the way to the floor, and hold for 10 seconds. When the SES light begins flashing, release the gas pedal. At this point the SES light will blink a 4 digit code (0 = 10 flashes), pausing briefly between digits, and pausing slightly longer between codes. Any stored codes will continue to repeat themselves.Once you have written down all the stored codes proceed to clear the computer.Press and hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor for more that 10 seconds. When the SES light starts flashing again release the gas pedal. The SES light should flash 10 times, pause, 10 times, pause, 10 times, pause, and 10 times.Turn the key to the “Off” positionWait 3 seconds, and start the car.

Scott, why don't you start a new stickie with all the codes. Then, we can add posts on how to resolve codes as we run across them. Eventually, the stickie would contain all the fixes.

Sounds like a winner. I know there is some answers on here already, so I will have to track those down and post them when I have the opportunity.

Scott where in the hell did you come up with that procedure? I know thats not in the service manual. This is the second time I have seen that procedure but havnt heard of it being succesfully used.

Compiled from information on two other sites.

Edit: I've got a 5th gen owner coming to check the procedure.

I have not actually pulled any codes that way. i've reset my ecu this way a lot of time. I am fairly sure at one point of this cylce you can get the codes. I've seen it blink in a fashion like i've gotten codes before.

Turn ignition switch on and wait about 3 seconds. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking. (here is where i think you can get a code from this.)4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)5. Wait about 10 second.6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

i tried the first set of instructions with my 03 infiniti i35, 65k miles. repeated times and nothing showed up on my dash. no blinking or anything. im doing this b/c i was driving on the bqe(nyc) and luckily i didnt merge too much to the left b/c the car just died on me, all the lights came up on my dash and the car was doing about 50 went it did this. i eased on the ebrake and came to a stop finally. i was towed to a yard, then the car started up and then died on me again about 10 blocks later. the starter cranks the engine but it seems that something with the combustion portion of the car is not working, so im thinking either somewhere before the throttle body, the plugs, or my injectors. i read a post around page 11 saying that it was the alternator but the alternator has nothing to do with the initial start up of the car. its only for a recharging of the battery. so help me guys i really dont want to take it to Infiniti of raping pee holes. email me at [email protected] so i can answer u in a timely fashion.

hey guys me again 03I35, my car shut off on the highway, and after soo many individual wrong advice, i decided to tackle this one solo. i purchased a diagnostic scanning tool on ebay $120IMG]http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x111 ... 07_001.jpg[/IMG], and i localized my problem. P0340 CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (bank 1)-closest to the intake. I purchased the CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR from INFINITI of Manhattan for about $93. I removed the entire intake assembly (10mm) to clear the way for the sensor. Also removed the entire wiring harness from the sensor back to a blue colored plug on the upper left side of the engine next to the intake manifold. Its a ***** to separate the green bracket from the sensor itself. I took it to a local mechanic and he did it in 2seconds. You hold the sensor and green part in oposing hands, push the tab on the green in and separate. i think this requires some up/down toggle play. i replaced, put all back together and plugged the diagnostic scanner back into the car erased the code and test drove it for 15min. tom im going to try a real test on the highway. oh man i wish i hope i did it right. pictures are in sequential order of the aforementioned [email protected] for support and comments.

Try this one instead of the procedure in the first post.

Hello Scott and everyone. I am new here, first timer, name is Peter and I am in Coventry, Rhode Island. I have a 2003 Maxima with 40,000 miles, bought it new, no real problems. Had to replace the rear brakes and rotors at 24,000 miles and just did the front brakes and a new set of tires.Had all the routine maintenance done on this Maxima dnd it is still Cherry, The wife's chariot. Now the Service Engine Soon light came on about a week ago. Car still runs like a champ, new air filter, cabin air filter, oil & filter change, and light is still on. I tried the "step on the accelerator pedal" procedure several times with no results: No Blinking, no codes, etc; light just stays on. I took one royal screwing from the local Nissan dealer and the "factory rep or Customer Service Rep as she preferred to be called) over the first brake problem and do not want to take it to them for another fleecing. Can you or does anyone else have any suggestions to help me out. Sure would appreciate it. Thanks,

Your local autozone, Kragen, Napa, Checker, whoever should be able to pull the code for you.

Sorry for maybe dumb question, but I just got a used 2004 maxima seAnd The service engine soon light popped up. But It popped up when the fuel was low and low fuel indicator was on as well. I immediately filled up, but the service engine soon light is still one. Is that normal? When fuel is low, does the service engine light supposed to come on. Or maybe i would have to check for codes? Will the method stated above work for a 2004 as well? Thanks

Get a code reader ASAP

$59 for an orange Actron one on the internet displayed in Chiltons

Want a reader and one that clears codes

Worth every dime-forget the flashing lights

Hi Folks. My name's Ralph and I'm new to this forum. I'm from Phoenix and I drive a '99 I30. The Service Engine Soon light has just come on and, from what I have read here, I seem to have 3 options: The gas pedal procedure (one of two), take it to Checker or buy a reader. I'd like to be able to utilize the Code list that Scott posted. Does one of the two gas pedal procedures work on this car? I'm also open to other ideas. Many thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to NICO.

The 99 is pretty unique. Your best bet would be to have it read by your local parts store.

Another question about my '99 I30: the code came up "P0138 - Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1)". I'm assuming this means the O2 sensor needs to be replaced. O2 sensors screw into the exhaust pipe or manifold, correct? If it's the manifold, how do I know which is Bank 1?I'm just not very good with anything newer than about 1987.

Thanks,

Ralph

Bank 1 is the side nearest to the fire wall. Sensor 2 will be the one furthest from the manifold (before the catalytic converter) on that bank.

One more thing... The light has gone out. Does that mean the car has magically fixed itself? I'm thinking I should go ahead and replace the O2 sensor...yes?

Yes, it means that the sensor is slow in responding and on it's way to total failure. Best to go ahead and replace it.
