I've read places that the s14 blacktop oil pick up tube is infact an upgrade from the red top s13 sr20det? Is this true?

Huh, Ive never heard that before.

I guess Ive never dropped the pan on an Notchtop, much less rebuilt one.

Ill have to keep this in mind next time I have my pan off.

i dont think nothing is wrong with the redtop one...although you could modify the pickup, by welding the pick up to the tube that it is attached to...and open up the mouth more to prevent blockage if you cave/dent the pan in..

mine wasnt attched at all when i felt like dropping the pan...so i welded it for good.

The blacktop strainers are also more durable. Nissan redesigned the forward support so it supports the strainer mouth part. The redtop strainer has the tube supported.

However, I've had both in hand, and I didn't notice the opening of the strainers to be different. But I wasn't exactly paying attention to that when I had them in hand.

The welds on the s14 are better and I think thats the 1st reason you should upgrade to that one. If the design was the same, essentially you could take tin snips and cut the opening bigger on the s13.

Im not sure what this is turning into but i was just wondering if the oil strainer thats known to come in the s14 or blacktops is considered an upgrade? I understand they will interchange so im just wondering now if the brackets will bolt up and all that or if there is any mods needed? Thank you for everyone who answered the question! Also part number is 15050-65F01 which is the BLACKTOP S14 OIL STRAINER

The blacktop strainer will bolt up to an S13 girdle. I guess it could be considered an upgrade since the opening is larger, which will allow for more volume to flow. However, the oil pump has never had the strainer proven to be a hindrance in flow.

The primary upside to the S14 strainer is the improved support. I've only seen one strainer failure on S13s, but it was pretty dramatic as the entire strainer fell off the tube.

I know. I've had them in my hands too. I refer to it as an S14 strainer to avoid confusion. And Nissan technically revised it for the S14 blacktop, but used it in the S13 blacktop as well because they were being produced concurrently.

Like everyone said the upgrade, from what I learned is the increased oil flow and the bracket in a better spot on the strainer unit itself. The S14 strainer will bolt up, the bracket just bolts into a different spot on the engine. This is where the S13 strainer bracket bolt up.This is where the S14 strainer bracket bolts. The only problem is that it's a PITA to get this bolt in but with a little patience it can be done.
