Well, I picked up a 1991 N/A motor (VG30DE) from Sacramento, CA today. It has (supposedly) 160k on it, with the last service being 30k ago. Spent $200 on it, so we'll see what comes of it.

Initial impression:

The alternator is missing. ALL vacuum hoses have been crudely ripped out or cut, along with almost all electrical connections. This will be fun to re-do. Coil packs are also missing. There is A LOT missing. He left the spark plugs though... How nice :)

Tear down probably won't start until later this week, but I'll try to keep this thread updated.

After spilling unknown engine fluid on my shoes (during the lift out of the truck), I threw them in the wash and grabbed my sandals for the pic... Safety first :bigthumb:

And you better be here for this Aaron!

Ah, but its mostly stuck together, no real fabrication done yet. It will be outright embarrassing to host a showcase of it's incompleteness... :gapteeth:

now's a good time to consider a new efi harness and silicone vacuum/water lines. I bought like 7 feet of 6mm and 8mm line (iirc) from hosetechniques.

What exactly are your plans for the n/a? Are you planning on just doing a simple rebuild or are you going to try and go all out for non boosted power?

I've seen some NAs get to 400rwhp, take a LOT of work.

500hp to the crank? a stock na is 220-230hp to the crank?

12:1 c/r, custom cams (from Australia), stronger valvesprings and some fairly extensive porting would get you that on a VH. Not sure about a VG though (unless you could get it to rev to the stratosphere).

I have two paths I can choose from, and it will all depend on what kind of revenue I can generate in the next year or so (I won't be working on the project much during school).

Option 1:

Simple rebuild. Will include new oversized pistons, all gaskets, bearings, etc. This is gonna run me around $900.

Option 2: (My personal favorite)

Advanced rebuilt. Everything from above, plus: Stronger rods and wrist pins, over-sized injectors (and possibly upgraded fuel rail), oversized valves with valve job, and ECU tune. All this is going to add on at least another grand.

If I do Option 2, it will be in preparation for a 100 shot of nitrous. I know it's not real popular around here, but it would be a great weekend-warrior option for me. However, I'm only going to do it if I do it right.

So what do you guys think? I'm actually leaning towards option 1 at the moment, it's just fun to think about option 2. Anyone got an option 3?

option 2 is another 5 grand, redwinterz, at least.

rods are 600-1.3k (for strong ones like carrillo).

injectors and fuel-rails are another 1.3k. and that's just for nismo740cc's, not the super-fancy 850cc's stuff.

you're gonna want at least one tt fuel pump, so that's another 300.

oversized valvetrain is maybe 2-3k (ferrea valves)

i wish it were that cheap/affordable, don't get me wrong.
