So, had the opportunity to install a rubber lip from EZLip.

Here is a general HowTo and also a little review of the product.

HowTo:

*Disclaimer* - I am not liable for anything you do to your car. This is just a basic walkthrough.

Task: Install an EZLip kit on a Y51 Infiniti M
Time:15-20 minutes
Tools/Supplies Needed:
  • Heat Gun (such as this one from harbor freight - it's always good to have this in the garage. I use it for everything from heating up bolts/nuts to cell phone screen repair lol)
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (kit includes a cleaning agent but I preferred to use a towel doused in the alcohol instead)
  • A helping hand to hold the excess lip material while working
  • Paper towels or clean microfiber towel
Process:

1) Jack the car up securely so you can get under it a bit. Nothing crazy. Just enough to allow you to get a good view of the front of the bumper while laying down, etc. I have a lift, so for me this was easy.

2) With the car lifted by whichever means you have at your disposal (I realize not everyone has a lift in their garage), first make sure that the installation area of the bumper is dry and generally clean.

3) Once the bumper has been generally cleaned, take your isopropyl alcohol towel and rub down the installation area to insure that it is as clean as possible prior to installation. Once the bumper is cleaned and dried, we can begin installing the lip.

4) Using the heat gun, heat up a 1-2ft segment of the lip and peel back the tape cover.

5) Slowly, going in 1 or 2" sections, with the lip still pretty warm from the heat start to install the lip on the underside of the bumper. You don't get points for speed here, so take your time and make sure its aligned with the edge.

6) Repeat steps 4-5 until you finish.

7) Cut off an excess lip material with a sharp box cutter or something similar.

Here are the results:

Review:

So, going into this, I wasn't really sure this look would work for me. The lip itself is pretty soft, flexible and rubbery (similar material to like a rubber grommet or 'boot') and likely will just bend back if rub up against a curb (unless it hardens once exposed to the elements?) so that's nice...it won't crack or break from what I can tell.

The glue, if the bumper is cleaned and the lip is installed properly, is INSANE. I don't want to say this mod is permanent, but if you remove the lip kit you'll likely have some scrapping/cleaning to do. It's stuck on there pretty good. This will not 'unstick' on you (unless you installed it wrong) while you're doing 140mph on the interstate lol.

Once I was done with the install, I instantly liked it. So, forget me thinking that I didn't think this would look good. I think it looks freakin fantastic if I may say so myself.

One kit is enough for the M's front bumper, although per Larz (Y50 M moderator) it was not enough for the rear bumper, FYI. I had like a foot left over.

All in all, I'm happy with this 'mod'.

Interesting idea being no one stateside seems to be producing a lip for these bumpers yet. I've seen these on eBay but never actually considered purchasing it, so it's nice to see one installed on a car that resembles my own. It looks better than I would have expected actually and thanks for the write up.

On another note, I see you have amber bulbs for the city lights as well. I have a set in mine, previously had the "white" LED but they were too bluish, I think the amber ones look better. Are yours LED or amber halogens?

Car looks really nice, I think if you black out the bars on the grill it will compliment the lip and lights very well...

Thanks.

For some reason I'm drawing a blank, but I'm pretty sure the parking lights are LED from VLeds.com.

Yes sir it is, I was the first Y51 tester for it so the one I have is a little bit different than the one he sells now which has a better layout.

Nice write-up. Looks like it could be a stock piece. :dblthumb: I can tell you now though that it would not last on a lowered M. That area of the bumper cover takes too much damage.

Maybe not, but the 'other' version (see the NICOclub homepage) is taking a brutalization on my daily driver, and it's WAY lower than 99% of the Ms around. :)

Not to bad, I was also considering this option. Nice to see how it looks and holds up.

I don't see why not. It molds very easy when you first apply it.

I have installed it on my aero bumper. I got the larger one (PRO) which is about twice the size of the regular EZ lip. I liked it a lot initially (see first picture), however it started degrading about a year into it. I had no issues with it sticking to the bumper but the top layer of rubber started getting delaminated from the rest. It basically started peeling in layers, see the pics below. I filed a claim with EZ lip and after some arm twisting got a new one sent in, but I don’t think I will be installing it. Just my experience….
