Post

Greetings all, about a month ago I picked up an 89' S13 with a DE motor under the bonnet. Car had been sitting for almost 3 years, and 2 owners ago, it was butchered beyond reason. This car was a literal fire hazard. The guy I bought it from informed me of the short comings and wanted to fix her up. With other projects in the way, he had to pass it off to me. I was happy to accept. For $950 the blue S13 Coupe was all mine. So what to do? Why not enter round 1 of US Drift at Summit Point Raceway in WV next year? Pretty big event known as Hyperfest. Circling my due date, I decided I needed to have wheels on the ground and key turned by March 2015. This build is basically a 1 man band with the help of a few good friends whenever they are able. As for the build itself... well, the title should clear that question up... Im going all in on an LS swap. The main purpose of this thread is to get feedback from other 240 owners, fabricators, builders, and generally anyone with more time on these cars than myself. As I continue with the build I will post pics and current status and I look to all of you for tips, advice, and anything you may know or have come across in your experience that will help me beat the learning curve. I have gone through several other forum threads, including this one, on LS builds for 240's. I got a decent idea but of course, nothing beats experience. So without further delay, here we go...
(side note, I want to surprise my dad at Hyper next season... My dad has been bugging to get back into racing ever since our days in dirt track sprint car racing, funding was cut due to college so we sold the sprint car. I cant afford a v8 sprinter just yet, but i can build a missile :chuckle: )
Image
The day i brought her home

Image
After 10 min of wrenching and charging the battery, i actually got it fired up and driving. Took it around the back roads near my house, no brakes, no PS, and the ECU had not been flashed for the MAF so it was rough to say the least. Never the less, she ran, and all 4 cylinders made solid compression (over 160)
Image
Image
Image
Image
a little liquid motivation and this build is underway. Well more like tear down...
Image
found this under the passenger seat. Guess someone had a wish list.
Image
Image
i wish i was joking about this, but that is insulation foam that was used to seal the speaker in the door. Im thinking they went with the Home Depot brand, good on outdoor window trim, bad on car speaker electronics
Image
another "clever" mod on this car was the install of a custom coolant catch can. The best part, was the cheap RTV that was used to seal the hose in the bottle cap. :wtf2:
C'mon man, everyone knows Grey Goose is the only way to catch coolant
Also note the nice fab notches cut into the shock tower mount location for an apparent "dope" tower brace. Good for mad drifts from what I hear.
Image
Image
these bad boys came apart with a light tug. No worries, it was not hooked to anything important
Image
Image
The KA is free from its disastrously wired prison.

I know im flying through the process here but this is a build thread, not a "watch this guy take his car apart" thread

Image
interior is getting bigger, car getting lighter...
Image
I will say one good thing, the guy did a prety nice job of removing the sound deadening crap out of the car already. I was pleasantly surprised that after removing the carpet, I found almost none left. That def saved me a weekend. :bigthumb:
Image
back up front the cross member is out. Im sending the steering rack core off to JCW and having a reman rack sent back.
Image
some nice stickers to add character... im shocked this car wasnt cambered to a trapezoid
Image
before i even realized it, Captain Slow arrived to lend a hand. (dont be fooled, it took him an hour to remove the bumper support)
I also removed the fuel tank and fuel lines.

I am working on getting more picture uploaded but like I said, Im flying through the tear down. If there are any comments or questions I will be happy to answer or provide more detailed pics of the tear down. Checklist for the first 3 weekends of work...
-Engine, Trans removed (sold)
-Engine bay cleaned and ready for prep work to begin (tubs, fix shock tower mount, plug firewall holes, cut some other firewall holes, coming soon)
-Interior 90% gutted, still need to clean and prep for roll cage install and paint. (HVAC, auto seat belt stuff, chassis harness all needs to be removed yet)
-Front and rear cross members removed (prepping for diff weld, 5 lug conversion, new suspension bits, steering rack, engine mounts, etc)
-Fuel tank out and trunk prepped for some fabrication (going to run a fuel cell and trunk battery relocation)

Still a good amount of work needed before new stuff can start going on the car. The bulk of this build is budget dependent so as the funds come in, i will start buying parts.
ANYONE WANT TO SPONSOR??! hahaha i will put your name on the car!!
In any case, so you all are up to speed:
Im going with a 5.3 or 5.7 Iron block truck engine with a T56 transmission. Plan is to convert all the accessories from F-body cars and whatnot. Going to run an LS6 intake, mild cam, and going to rebuild the top end on the LS (stronger push rods,, etc). Engine will be coming from a family friend who deals in scrap and salvage trucks. I have almost the whole car planned out but in the early stage there is plenty of time to change my mind. For budget reasons, I am most likely sticking with the truck engine. (im cheap :chuckle: )
I will be updating on the regular and once the serious build up work begins, i will be more diligent with photos and details. Thanks for checking this out and reading, i hope i do not disappoint.

Thanks guys, I should have updates tomorrow posted. haha an yeah I would love to drop the 6.0L in there but I am in love with the idea of building a "junkyard" engine. As for the turbo builds... I plan to make a DD car for that

So this weekend was not very productive. I was entertaining family so I was only able to spend some time Sunday with the car.
-Finished removing the HVAC and chassis harness
-Dropped the entire rear cross member/diff/suspension/etc
-cleaned up more of the engine bay

This coming weekend should be far more productive

almost time for a roll cage

So I know i am late on posting the weekly progress (forgot my usb cable at home), but i will have pics up on the recent work. I spent the weekend tubbing my front fenders out and ripping all those wonderful Nissan bolts out of my rear cross member and suspension  . Meanwhile, i was searching for brakes i came across a perplexing problem... I cant decide how far to go with the suspension build. By that i mean, i plan to put heim end rods, bars, links, and all that but what about steering knuckles, or front lower control arms? My initial thought was to just repress new ploy bushings into my FLCA/RLCA but now i am not sure. Also, i planned to just clean and repaint my knuckles but would it be wise to get better steering knuckles? Again, this will be a drift only track car with a V8 power plant. Any comments or input from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

So here is my latest update...
fender tubs arrived (etrailer.com supplied)
completed driver side tub, PS cut but needs to be welded up and installed
Cleaned the diff for welding
yelled a good amount of cuss words at the rear suspension bolts
Image
YAY Etrailer, with a touch of Z :)
Image
9"x15"x32" i believe is the size
Image
hacked it out pretty hard
Image
Image
Laid out a mock up with paper then traced and cut on the trailer fender... realized i wanted to make the tub bigger so i re welded some of the cut off back on
Image
Image
cut out the side piece from some 16 gauge i had and then tied it all together
Image
Image
Prob not the best looking tub. I have seen so many tub posts on here that just blow me away with awesome. I attempted to follow several of builds from the "Tubs!!!" thread but i dont hold a candle to some of those. Anyhow, im satisfied with the result for my first attempt but learned alot for the next time.
PS tub is cut but i need to tie it into the car. (next weekend)
Image
on to the suspension... every one of those bolts are locked into the bushings. I went crazy trying to yank them out. Lots of heat, and lots of impact work. Quit for awhile to finish the front, said alot of nasty things to the car
Image
ball joints actually went very easy with the pickle fork
Image
all but one bolt came free. Need heat
Image
there is half the rear. Still got the diff out so i jumped to that
Image
Image
Soaking in cleaner atm. I am a decent welder but i dont trust myself welding a diff. I work for Mack/Volvo so i have some friends in the machine shop with decades of welding experience. They will be locking gears together :chuckle:

Thanks Kouki... i would have had my weekly update posted by now, however, last week I went under the knife for some knee reconstruction. I have been laid up for a few days. I did manage to get the diff back from the machine shop at work. Also placed an order with Energy Suspension for the bushings I will need and for various other random stuff that I can work on from the seated position. UGH. Pics coming soon.

sooooo original 89,
Good news to the build.
THE LS IS ON THE WAY! Sometime next week i should have the LSX at the house (finally) i am also currently waiting on a few other things to arrive before making any further progress.
-VooDoo13 arms for the rear
-Energy Suspension Bushings
-gasket kit for the Dif
-new fender tub for PS (because i did the "measure once cut to more than i should have" procedure) idiot**

ha thanks fellas
Revv - yeah it starting raining so i started to rush
I initially considered $5000 as a budget, but then i just said to hell with it, I want to try my hand at Pro/Am. So to add all the race spec stuff (cage, sfi fuel cell, etc) i decided to set it closer to $7000. I am getting a decent amount of misc parts and service for $free.99 so that is certainly helping.
Rwlesher - I cant wait either!! I feel like there is just so much to do until i get to fire it off

I really wanted to take pictures of current work but i have not had the chance yet since much of the parts are still being shipped. That and my stupid knee are slowing me down. Soon... very soon...

Sorry for the long absence. This whole knee surgery thing is for the birds! Im slowly recovering and able to do more things on the car. Only a few pics this time but i wanted to make sure no one thought i gave up and disappeared lol.
Some parts finally arrived and more are on the way including the welcoming of a 5.7L LS1 which should arrive thursday.
Figured i would show the camp fire, smores anyone?
Image
next up is the finished diff
Image
Image
I spent a good couple hours cleaning up the weld and freeing all the spatter. I give it a 40/60 chance of exploding first time out :chuckle:
i made a new gasket and closed the diff up for good. i still want to sand blast and paint but my mobility is still an issue.

Finally, a little teaser of whats to come when im able to work on this thing again.... VooDoo :dblthumb:
Image
energy suspension bushings came as well so i have that to do also.
Cant wait for the power plant to arrive. Im only able to work from a chair at this point so im looking for small things to tinker on. i should be good to go real soon.

What kind of subframe bushing are you going with solid or poly? Burning them out was the fun part lol. Installing the master kit was more of a pain, but I worked through it. I just finished my bushing replacement 3 weeks ago. good luck with the work and your recovery!

I went with the Poly bushings. An yeah i have to go through all of the other smaller bushings yet. Im putting heim ends in where ever i can. I have a press to help the process. Thanks for the support dude. Once i have the engine (tomorrow) i will be able to get alot done to that.

They feel nice after I changed all my bushings the ride is 100x better. I used a 20 ton press and a bench vise proved worthy on the uprights and a few arms.

Build looks legit so far, so what mounts/install kit are you using? Any plans for steering angle?

What drifting experience do you have?

Captain Slow and I headed into the woods of West Virginia yesterday to pick up the power plant... hello LS power
Image

It will be a little while until I get to do much to it. This could be a temp hold in progress for the time being. Im still unable to do a whole lot with my knee and I will be out of town for a few weekends. I will try to add pics of the finished engine bay with tubs. Plus I need to start getting that roll cage going and the suspension put back in. Coilovers coming soon

Sorry BadBob I did not see your post initially. Thanks btw...
-I have been up in the air about which kit to run for the mounts but after following the thread by GoodzKouki and his LS swap, I am pretty confident on the poly mount Sikky kit with a Chase Bay harness.

-For angle, i have not made a decision yet. I have complete VooDoo arms and bars all around, i plan on modifying my FLCA, but i have not decided on the knuckle situation. I have seen alot of different threads on modified stock knuckles, the MA Motorsports knuckles, and then various other fab shops coming onto the scene with their own style. I am capable of being convinced one way or the other but i was hoping for some insight from others with experience.

-My experience with competition drifting is zero, my experience with tandem drifting is also basically zero. my experience comes from back road, parking lot, side streets, grass roots drifting. I ran a 350Z for a good while before i decided to do a proper build with safety in mind and actually learn how to do this tandem style and what not on a closed course and get off the street. i also have been driving dirt track sprint cars since i was 16. I am not new to driving hard but i will say beyond the grass roots drifting i am new to it. Thus I want to make sure the car is as good as it can possibly be, that way its on me to get better knowing the car will always be there. Im really trying to just have some fun and try to be competitive at the same time. If that makes sense :)

Sikky's LS kit is legit, so is Fueled racing's kit. When it comes to wiring, I always suggest wiring specialties... I am running their LS harness and couldnt be happier.

When it comes to steering angle, any mod'd knuckle will be good. The most important investment in any drift build is seat time. I ran no steering angle mod's my first year and just wanted to learn the basics, then upgraded to mod'd knuckles. Have fun dude!

Thanks for the advice Badbob, I appreciate the insight. Im 99% sure im going with the Sikky kit at this point. An i will def look deeper into wiring specialties. As for seat time, i couldnt agree more. I was not sure just how far to take it at first. Since this would be my first competitive year i didnt think i would need to go with the knuckles. I think for this season i will put the money into more tires lol. go for knuckles next season.

-follow up: what are you doing for rear brakes? Im still undecided about running 2 calipers. i can get 2 sets of ZX calipers so i was planning on having a split pedal and handbrake caliper. Thoughts?

Also, im still unable to do a whole lot on the car and it is killing me. Stupid leg

I am running reman'd stock rear calipers with Project Mu pads (which are great pads for locking the rears). I am running an inline PBM hydro currently. If you have the funds, then a dual caliper setup is ideal and has it benefits, but inlines have been used successfully for a long time and do the trick.

I didnt put my hydro in until a few months ago, as handbrakes arent really needed until you begin to tandem (for angle and line correction). :dblthumb:

Thanks for that Badbob, i just finished rebuilding my ZX calipers so i think for now i will stick to just a single setup in the rear. I certainly do not mind running inline hydro i just have not experienced the feel of inline vs split. I agree with your points and by that, i will run inline for now.

Thanks for the link Matt, i was able to find it via the website. I will be sending you a PM in the near future with any final comments/concerns before i pull the trigger.

As an update: I am getting closer to being able to work on the car, 9 weeks post surgery and i can walk without any significant assistance. Still cant lift or move around enough to start working hard but i have been keeping a little busy.
-300ZX Calipers picked up and rebuilt all the way around ( seals, clips, pads)
-Most of the interior bits delivered but not installed (seats, gauges, fire extinguisher, Battery relocation kit, wiring, emergency cut off switch, battery, roll cage foot plates, custom seat rails)
-sand blasted and painted front sub frame and began mocking up a custom power brace
-waiting for brackets to be blasted before i re assemble the front sub frame. Waiting also on coilovers :frown:

I have a few pics but nothing worth posting yet until i get more done... trust me folks, this is killing me

Thanks for asking Kouki :)
Its funny but I am actually in the process of posting an update. Monday should have all the pics gathered. I had an awesome photographer friend, (my girl crush  ) come out and take black and whites of the car in 35mm. I need to get those uploaded from a CD. I also spent my most recent weekends working on chassis bracing. Made a power brace, finished up tubs, fixed my various window leaks, fabricated some bash bars for the front and rear, fabricated seat rails for my buckets, battery relocation, etc. I will have something shortly.
Im finally getting around better and I am done with rehab. Just going to take a bit longer before I can do crazy things, but I am back to work.
