Hi, my girlfriend has to have a camera go down her throat to check the inside of her stomach. She is so nervous about this that she can't sleep, she feels like throwing up and it's just making her so scared.

One of the biggest problem with her is that she gets nausea REALLY easily... my question is, the doctor told her that it's going to be a scope going down and she will be completely asleep, will she feel any pain? What kind of side effects? Is it dangerous at all? How long will it take? How big is the scope?

I mean I know I'm just throwing alot of questions in but I don't know anything about this and I wish I can tell her some stuff to make her calm down... so help anyone?

Thanks in advance....

Probably an Upper-GI. I've had it done, not a huge deal. The Lower-GI sucks though...care to venture a guess as to where the camera goes?

The docs are checking her stomach for an ulcer, thats all...

She will have a little soreness in the throat afterwards, not much more. Kinda like a cold would give you.

My Dad had to have a camera go down his throat to get a growth removed from his throat. He said that they put you clear out and when it is done than it is done. You never even know what happened.

Is your girlfriend 12? Tell her to suck it up and quit complaining.

No, shes not 12 shes 23 but she never had to do anything like this before so she's just being paranoid.

Actually she's being tested because of acid reflux also...

But I'm glad that everyone is saying that it's not a big deal at all =) She will be happy to read this.

Ladies and gentlemen take note! If you want to verify something medical-related, hit up an automotive forum before you consult a medical professional!

I'm sorry, it's just that NICO is a great site to learn new stuff but I see alot of people just making useless comments or trying to just troll a thread to look funny or for post counts.... I thought you were trying to do either one Sorry again.

I had to have a lower GI scope when I was small...There wasn't enough anesthesia and I woke up halfway during the op....That was one of the most horrible days of my life. stupid doctors...

Yeah my fault too. Should've put a JK in there.

Anyways, she'll be fine. Nothing to worry about. Once they put her to sleep, she'll be out cold.

Okay, I guess the message here is that the procedure's done differently by different doctors. I had the endoscopy done my Senior year in HS, and they did the following:

put a plastic bite-ring in my mouthsquirted some nasty bananna-tasting stuff in my throat to bypass my gag reflex and numb the areapushed the scope down, took pictures and scraped for a biopsy, then pulled it out

I was conscious the entire timeIt freaked me out, but no real painWas sore afterward

She'll be fine.

A little soreness, like others have said, will be the only thing she'll notice.

As far as personal experience, I'd be willing to bet that what she's having done is far more pleasant than going the other direction... while awake. Butt cameras ftl...

i had a hiatal hernia, your stomach pushes up in your esophagus... causes REALLY bad acid reflux. Got so bad i couldn't swallow food.

It's not bad at all. actually once they figured out it was a hernia, i had a chiropractor pull my stomach down and i've never had a problem again.

It's nothing. I had it done a few years ago and she won't feel anything at all.
