2008 EX35 with G37Xs Coupe Y-PIPE/MIDPIPE/MUFFLER INFO/PICS

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I finally had a chance to go to my local muffler shop and installed the G37 coupe Y-pipe and Mid pipe. The G37 muffler is already installed to my EX35 2 years ago and this is how it sounds like with just the G37 Muffler on and a stock EX35 Midpipe/Ypipe. (My actual car below)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRjeJHtngbg

Here`s the fact.

1) G37 coupe Y-PIPE according to my muffler tech (the actual manager of the shop) is the same as the EX35 Y-PIPE (HR) - Just by looking at it it is the same. He had seen thousands of pipes everyday, which I did not doubt him. I did visually compared the two side by side. Although, we did not measure the hole diameter using a caliper. (Busy shop) Since the old Y-PIPE is rusted out, I decided to install the G37 Y-pipe even if it is the same. The good thing about this shop is , I was free to go inside the bay at will. Normally, shop will ask you to wait in the waiting area for insurance/safety purpose. I was in the bay 95% of the time, 5% not there when he was welding something. :gapteeth:

2) The G37coupe Midpipe has a much bigger diameter pipe hole than our EX35 and 2 resonators are huge too! The 2 hooks that hold the midpipe to the car`s body (rubber grommet) are not on the right location for G37 coupe midpipe. The tech had to cut those 2 metal pieces and welded it to the midpipe where it will align with the rubber grommet under the EX35 body. Visually at first, the tech aligned the G37 midpipe with the EX35 Mid pipe (still installed) and it looks the same length, but then the G37 coupe midpipe seems to be an inch longer when it was finally fitted in. So, the whole G37 muffler has to push out a bit more to accommodate the extra length. The muffler hooks (3x) are still fastened inside the rubber grommet, but at the maximum position towards the back.

3) The exhaust tips are now sticking out a bit further than when I had the shorter EX35 midpipe. I cannot remember how the stock EX35 muffler sticks out before? All I remember is when I put the G37 muffler on with stock EX35 pipings, the muffler tips went in a bit inside the bumper hole.

What do you guys think? I kinda like the old looks. (G37 muffler only with EX35 stock MIDPIPE) - PARDON the dirty pics....

Sound-wise/Performance-wise?

The BIG CAT PURRRR is gone! at less than 2.5K RPM, but the car seems to be a bit more responsive and also less drag (engine breaking) when you ease the gas pedal.
It seems like the engine breathes a bit better than with the stock EX35 midpipe. The Big CAT Purrrr only comes alive at 3K RPM and up or when gunning the gas pedal.

To make this short, the Exhaust note is between the ALL stock EX35 pipings sound and the EX35 with just the G37 muffler installed. It is right there in the middle. I like it this way since, it does not sound like I am always reeving up the engine even if I was just slowly rolling away from the stoplight.

I will post a video when the wind is gone. I made one a few minutes ago, but the wind noise is terrible.

That hint of burbling is so tantalizing. I'm going to have to try twice as hard and not pull the trigger on an exhaust upgrade.

Yeah, I had thought of getting the magnaflow setup for the g, but might just go with the stock g stuff after this.

Sounds great! How is the noise while driving? Curious how much louder it is inside while highway driving.

It sounds like a stock EX35 no droan..
The only time you will hear the G coupe sound signature is when you gun the throttle or abruptly revv the engine to 3k rpm and up. It is totally very quiet for normal driving. Just a little bit tone down compare to the G coupe stand alone muffler setup cruising sound wise... There is no way it sounded like the aftermarket ones. I think Infiniti should have done this from the start. You will love it!

BTW, my only concern putting a G coupe midpipe is the extended muffler tips look. It is growing on me now.
My passenger side tip is sticking out a bit longer than the driver side. I pulled the lower bumper cover (black color)out to make it look even.

I think the bumper cause it to look uneven initially bec. I was rear ended once and my whole bumper cover was replaced.

Thanks for the heads up. Not too worried about it sticking out a bit. Looking forward to doing this to mine.

That's great! I had a chance to observe the sound more while cruising this morning on the interstate and also some 55 MPH back roads.

- highway at 65MPH in D , no drone.

The only time I heard drone sound was driving in D at a very slow pace. Which I normally hear when the car exhaust was stock on very few instances ( It is just more obvious this time) You know when you were coming from 45MPH and decided to cruise at slower speed like 25MPH and the transmission did not downshift and stayed to 4th and 5th and the Tach RPM is at 1.5-1.7 RPM. I am sure this is normal. And 99% of the time we don't decellerate very slowly where the tranny will not downshift to a bigger gear.

We experienced this driving a manual tranny when we were inexperienced to drive stick and we tend not to downshift coming to stop and the gear is to low (4th-5th) for the speed like 20 MPH and the car makes drone sound like it is about to die.. :rotflmao

BTW, I just found out that the DS mode is the best way to launch a car from stop.
It gives very consistent 0-60 time and gives me 4.06 sec 0-45 MPH ( last time I did 4.15 secs on Manual mode and snow tire) and still the best run of 6.3 sec at. 68 F. I am done making this car fast. I think 6.3 sec is decent for this heavy car and that is the real world run. I did a 0 to 60 last year at 89F weather and get 6.3 sec on full manual, but not very consistent, mostly at low 6.4 or high 6.3 sec.

So, yes the G37 coupe muffler did not affect the lowend torque of the car due to bigger exhaust. Maybe, I gain on the highend?

Great to hear you really going this route. I would like to know your impression as well. Check G37 forum classified for the midpipe.

Do you happen to know if the intermediate pipe is the same on all g37s (AWD or RWD)? Want to make sure I get the right one for my AWD EX. I have come across quite a few that are listed as RWD G37, but was not sure if they would work.

Thanks,

Jason

I believe the RWD should work since the AWD differential is pretty way up high with enough clearance for the RWD midpipe.

Well, got the stock exhaust off (had to cut OEM bolts). Going to shorten the G37 midpipe about 1 7/8", as that will resolve the hanger issue, and the tips sticking out too far. Have to locate new studs for the y to midpipe joint, but the midpipe I bought looks new, so those are all good.

Good times.

Thanks for the update jr. The muffler place I went to just removed the hanger stud from the Midpipe and relocate and welded it again to the midpipe where it ligned up to the cars underbody hanger slot. Isn't a pain to cut the midpipe?
So far I kinda like it sticking out now. the passenger side sticks more

Instead of having to cut and reweld both hangers, I'm just going to cut a chunk out of the single pipe where the y pipe flange is, and reweld it. Putting the two side by side, everything will line up by removing the section there.

You only need a G37 coupe muffler and Midpipe. The Y-pipe is the same for both Gcoupe and EX35.

You can get. Used muffler and midpipe here.

http://www.myg37.com/forums/private-cla ... cond_pass=

You can have them all for $300 installed, since sometimes guys on that forum only sells $75-100 for muffler and $ 75-100 for midpipe. Local sale is better since you'll save shipping cost. The midpipe hangers need to be cut of and reweld to line up. My exhaust tips stick out a bit and JRmototrsports55 member here at NICO cut 1 7/8" off the midpipe to prevent muffler tip sticking out.

Cutting the midpipe the 1 7/8", you don't have to relocate the hangers either.
