Post

Hey all,

I'm new to the forums and also owning a Z car, having just purchased a 91 300ZX NA 2+2 a few months ago. After driving the car for some time, I've discovered that my shocks are in terrible condition, with the front passenger side one completely blown, giving it a very scary ride when you hit a bumpy road (especially in a turn).

Anyways, my questions are:
I'm going to be replacing the shocks and springs both front and rear along with the rubber parts associated with them, so are there any specific shock and spring brands that anyone would recommend to use or avoid? It's worth noting that I only daily drive this car, so I'm looking to maintain near-stock ride height and ride quality.

Also, is there anything else I should consider doing to the car during this maintenance process while I have everything torn apart?

Thanks!

Welcome to Nico!
Given your preference for a stock setup, the KYB GR2 shock is a popular choice for cost and performance, very close to stock. If you check spme of our better vendors such as ConceptZ performance and Z-1 Motorsports you can also assess other brands and configurations for your Z, and get the best costs and availability.
You should be aware that your Z most likely will need new springs as well which causes a camber issue and worn tires, service time usually at the same interval as your shocks. Should you decide to go to coilovers as a one-stop solution to needing both items, more parts must be replaced although they may need replacing (front and rear upper control arms and front tension rods), and our vendor Powertrix offers a top of the line choice for that solution and the best costs and service possible.
My advise would be to have your entire suspension checked due to being a true multi-link suspension, where all parts need to be in spec for correct operation, and go about your parts search from there knowing exactly what you need. There may be some brake, ps rack leakage, and tie rod issues in your 24 year old car to consider as well...good luck!
