I recently bought a 91 300zx tt automatic. Cold start is good and car runs fine.

When I get gas, it takes forever to start back up...maybe 7 or 8 tries of me turning the key and pumping the gas pedal. The ride is rough, cat shakes, and I hear a weird sound coming from the engine. Best way I can describe it is that it sounds like fluids swishing.

Now let's say, I got gas today. In a day or 2, cold start on the car will be fine. Hot start won't. Not as bad as after I get gas, but still have to give it about 2 or 3 turns.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Mine does the same, 99% fuel pump.

Check the ecu for codes first, actually go into the ecu for retrieving codes. Dont just rely on the CEL

Could be;

CTS
Fuel pump
Injectors
Corroded plugs
TPS
CAS

Thanks guys. I was thinking it was the purge valve?

Need to get myself an obd1. The check engine light only comes on sometimes btw.

You dont need a scanner, there is a procedure for checking the codes without any special tools/scanners. Check out the FSM for details.

**Update**

So I asked my mechanic for some help and he said it wasn't the fuel pump nor the purge valve, but it was the spark plugs. Changed them and now the car starts fine hot. It also started good after I got gas, but it sounded like it didn't want to fire up. Going to put some more gas in tomorrow with fuel injection cleaner and see how that goes.
