Heres the deal:

Just recently leased a 2008 Z. Currently has above 2700 so far.

Question is: Is it normal for the engine to smell like its burnt? I think the reason why this is is that I, dumb enough, racing a beamer, pushed my rpm to 8000, thus making that VQ work hard. Its new, yes I know, but since I've revved it that high so far, the car smells like burnt oil or something. Is it normal since its brand spankin new?

some hr's are known to burn oil....and burnt oil smells way different from a burnt clutch!...clutch smells more rotten.

did you downshift to the wrong gear?

new cars sometimes emit funny smells as the engine breaks in. What does it smell like and where it coming from. You know where is the smell the strongest. Maybe you ran over a plastic bag and some of it is melting around your exhaust pipes.

Does it just smell sort of like hot plastic? I am on my second new Z and for about the first 4k on my '06 I could smell it once in a while (hard driving). The '07 only has about 800 miles on it so far (rarely gets driven), but it smells that way once in a while as well. Unless it's oil, or you see smoke, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I work for Infiniti and I am familiar with the smell you are talking about on the new cars. If it keeps up I would definately get it checked out. But from the sounds of it, it is just the new motor.

funny!...that happened to be a month ago. i saw the bag get under the car but didn't see it come out from the rear view mirror. I was hoping that the bag was stuck on the front grill. true enough, it was wrapped around my exhaust pipe. now there's a burnt image of VONS on my midpipe.

It only smells like its burnt after revving high on a low gear. After letting the engine cool off, it goes back to smelling normal. So i dunno if its because its barely breaking in, or i mightve over done sumthin.

all z's come with a rev limiter or fuel cut-off... it's suppose to save your engine from excessive rpm's....however you can still mess it up if you sustain redline rpm's for an extremely long duration.

I had a similar issue and found a plastic bag melted to the exhaust pipe. Keep an eye out for it.

I think dont you suppose to be pushing you car that hard if its brand new. your going to ruining your car quicker that way, as for the smell check your oil level from time to time maybe your buring oil.

My car was doing the same thing when I would run it out to redline. Smelled like burning plastic. It doesn't do it now that I have put a few more thousand miles on it. However when I was sitting at a redlight other day, I caught a whiff of fumes that smell like burning wood. I'm pretty sure it was coming from the exhaust, but burning wood. WTF?

Supi also have a 08 z and it had that same burning smell im at 3k miles now and i remember that smell coming when u usually push the car... u know what i mean by pushing. But now that im out of that driving fast phaze and saving gas mileage is a priority that burning smell does not exist anymore
