how did the Y-pipe affect the sound of your car (those who have it) as far as the drone? my car has horrible drone and when i took my cat off a while back, it got even worse. i think i heard a couple ppl say the y-pipe helped with their drone so i'd like to confirm this... soon i will take off my electronic exhaust cut-out and i will have a Y-pipe from that and since i'm cutting my piping cut to take it off, i figure i might just have the shop make the runners a little larger in diameter (like the Y-pipe from racingline).

well I'm gonna have to say that in my case it drones like a sob. lol IMO I love hearing it constantly, but I know some ppl hate drone. Most of the highway driving I do is about 65mph and 2100 rpm give or take 100rpm.

It drones at that speed and I'm not saying that in a bad way, it's because I like it. But, I also haven't tried just the y-pipe with the stock exhaust or any other aftermarket exhaust besides the nismo.

For in town driving it's the most bada$$ set up, I LOVE the sound all the way through the rpms.

I also don't know what you consider not to be drone. Like not hearing the exhaust at all while the cruise is set? I don't notice it being annoying because I do have music on all the time, but I also spend less than 3 hours a month on the highway so I don't expirience it everyday.

this seems like a long reply for not much help lol but I hope some of it does

lol i know what you mean, i took my cat off before and it got louder and made the car sound nicer but also made the drone worse... that combined with the road noise from my bald crappy stock tires and it'll drive you crazy. right now, ive noticed its super annoying in 6th gear (manual mode) but if i put it in 5th, the sound gets quieter and not so bad.

many people were saying that it pushes the drone to a higher RPM and gets rid of it while cruising. so i figured it was the larger diameter of the 2 pipes that go into 1 (since i didnt mess with those 2 pipes before).

nice post. ive been wondering myself about this..nobody seems to want to answer maybe because racingline chimes into post every now and then. i mean you can say whatever you want-money talks-you wont be punished.haha you can callup racingline and tell them their products are a pos & hope they go under- this and that..and then you say i want the y-pipe/stb/endlinks etc. heres my money. Theyll still take it, and smile!

honest reviews please . . . because im going to buy their products too.

y-pipe with stock exhaust is what I'm rocking now. and its AWESOME. its got the roar but without the drone (not like a little drone, but actually ZERO DRONE ). it burbles and it sounds like a mechanical race engine kinda like the old straight six engine in the old bmw m3 and z4m coupe.

its the setup I'd recommend to everyone!

lol ya but its waaay over priced! $289 plus shipping would come out to $300+!!! most of the power is coming from taking off the cat anyways and ive felt my car pull much harder with no cat. i already have the "Y" part from my cut-out i'm taking off tomorrow. so to take off the cat and increase the pipe diameter of the stuff i didnt do yet, i'm expecting to pay about $60. i'd much rather pay $60 and gain a COUPLE less hp then paying $300 for a couple more hp then the $60 option..... plus the shop i go to does some pretty crazy stuff with cars and the owner used to be a pro drag racer and knows his stuff.... main thing is more flow. more flow = more power

too much flow=no backpressure, but i'm sure he knows what he is doing since he was involved in racing

yeah too much flow and there is no more low end torque...stock exhaust with racingline y-pipe doesn't loose low and gains mid range and highend. it costs what it costs because it's one of the rare parts avaible for our coupe that actually has some dyno and R&D to backit up.

plus the sound is amazing lol

turns out i'm not going to get it done... he told me $30 to take off my cut-out and i was expecting probably another $30 to get it all done. i go there today and he tries to tell me $80 to take off my cut-out and well hes at it, he'll just take off the cat for free. so $80 to take off the cut-out regardless if i take off the cat or not. so i said f*** that and went to another shop that does everything from broke down POS cars to lambos and ferraris. they took off the cut-out for $40.

this might be a noob question but why is the raceingline y pipe only for the 3.5?can one be custom fabricated for the 2.5?

the 3.5 is a V6 and the 2.5 is a i4. i4 meaning inline 4 with all 4 cylinders in one line. the 3.5 is a V6 so it has 3 cylinders on each side making a V shape. headers (exhaust manifolds) hook up to the engine so the V6 has 2 pipes, one on each side of the engine. so then the 2 pipes (the headers) go into 1 (a Y-pipe) and we have a single pipe that goes to our mufflers. so long story short, the i4 has 4 pipes go into 1 (only has 1 exhaust manifold aka header) and the V6 has 3 into 1 on each side having 2 headers.... the 2 headers go into a Y-pipe and the 2.5 only has 1 header so it cant go into a Y-pipe.

thanks for the explaination. your opinion, what do you like the best setup would be for the 2.5?

honestly, i dont know much about the 2.5. i've tried a variety of different things with my 3.5 and have taken it to the track multiple times to compare how they have affected my times.... ive only seen a 2.5 from underneath one time... the Stillen headers would give you a decent amount of power but will throw a check engine light and i'm not sure if they are street legal in your area or not.

What about if I get the Y pipe with my tanabe set up. Would it make it sound better?

ya! a Y-pipe eliminates the cat and that will make the exhaust louder (not super crazy loud but a nice amount louder) and it will also improve the sound quality... with my exhaust, when i had no cat it had more crackles and burbles when i let off the gas.
