x-trail clicking shift lever

i read about the problem with the loud clicking sound with other nissan models when you press on the brake. it's very audible now, but that isn't my main concern.

its a 2003 auto x-trail 250x 4wd.

the problem is when you press on the button to shift on the lever, it starts clicking repeatedly until i move it away from park mode. it goes through the gears fine and absent when driving.

anyone have any ideas? thanks
