Generally speaking 7.5-9" is the recommended wheel width for that size. Usually one would try to buy a tire that has your wheel width as the nominal of the range but that is not always possible.

I am asking because I bought my brother new wheels for his 350Z and the back wheels are 18X9 instead of the 18X8.5 that he has one now

Do you know the exact tire? It would be easy enough to look up the specific one so you could be 100% sure.
