IIRC the HUD functions on its own, so as long as its a DOHC HUD unit it'll work (I think they all are, as I don't think it was offered on the SOHCs..), however you won't have the correct redline on your tach (it'll read revs correctly, just where it has the redline marked is not the CA's redline, it'll be before that.. just tell your friends you're not afraid to overrev!) and I don't think you can swap the correct one in unless you find a CA HUD tach, assuming they exist.. but it should work as is

pretty much, although with stock cams, there's not much point.

Even more so with the stock (or even T25G) turbo. Shift at 7200RPM max, or you are wasting your bearings.

IIRC stock revlimit is 7700, redline indicated on the gauge sometime before that (7200? 7400?)

Thanks guys, actually I have the SOHC hud I guess since I have the KA24E... Im not worried about the redline on my stock tach, I dont plan on runniny my ca super hard, just the normal street use... I hope my HUD will still work though, cuz I love it

nope if its SOHC then you're stuck, have to get a DOHC HUD or go HUDless w/ DOHC.. AFAIK the tachs on HUD and non HUD are not interchangable..

as for 7500 redline, thats the indicated redline on the gauge - the ECU cuts out at 7700.

Supposidly, the SCC Project Silvia used thier HUD cluster with the Silvia tach, the face is just a tiny bit smaller on the HUD unit. Of Course, I have a friend who tried it, and completly messed up his DOHC cluster. So I dunno.

I have a sohc HUD car with HUD. It didnt' work to start with so I switched out the cluster for another sohc cluster and from then on it worked fine. when I swapped in the CA it stopped working and I haven't bothered to do any research on it since. when I put it into the new car I'm going to hardwire the speed sensor to the ecu and see if that helps. If that doesn't help then I have an analog dohc cluster I'm going to use. the speedos are different diameters, which isn't that big of a deal (the HUDs are smaller btw) but the analog dohc tach's needle didn't clear my gauge cluster so I swapped needles. My tach is very laggy compared to the aftermarekt tach that I have (even more so than normal) so I think this messed up the response of the tach (since its probably calibrated for a certain weight of needle). cliffs notes: my sohc HUD didn't work with ca18det, error unknown.analog tachs won't fit in HUD clusters without modifying and then they don't work right.

Make life simpler, find a dohc HUD cluster.

Ive read on another forum that if I just switch ou the tach's the hud actually still works... is this true or is the Heads up display not going to wokr

from what I've read the HUD gets its speed signal from the speed sensor, just like the analog ones. So as long as you are using your stock speed sensor you should be fine, no matter what tach you have. However, like I said, my car's sohc HUD speedo quit working when I swapped.

It uses the standard speed sensor, this much is true, what I've always wondered is how hard it'd be to splice a HUD unit into a standard analog speed/tach gauge cluster. I like having a HUD in my car, I don't like a purely digital readout. I like being able to glance down and see a good old fashioned needle and face if the HUD borks up or something.

Also, how do you adjust how high or low the thing projects the readout on your windshield? I know my GTP's HUD has an adjustment on the dash, but I have no clue how the S13's was supposed to adjust, if it does.

you don't need to adjust it, it just reflects in the reflective area on the windshield when everything is bolted in right.I'm switching my analog car over to hud but I'm keeping the HUD cluster, harness, dash, and HUD unit... I don't think you could use the HUD unit on an analog cluster because the HUD is driven off the digital speedometer.

one could always hack a circuit to count speedo pulses and do some simple math and drive the LCD directly as its likely just a dumb segmented display, not some fancy digitally controlled / communicated interface to the display.
