Whinny Noise?

I've got a 6 speed Versa and I've noticed that my car gets a really whinny sound to it when I rev it up to about 4-5k. I thought it might just be lack of mods or something but I have an exhaust and I've seen vids with people who have cai and exhausts and they all have the same whinny sound. So my question is, what is the whinny sound?

they will all do that... its just the poor motor screaming "PLEASE STOP!!!!"

So far I seen all cars with manual trannys making that sound at reverse, i guess its normal lol.

Well, every car has an exhaust. Lack of modifications? No. The sound you are hearing is normal for a 1.8l 4 cylinder engine. If you're looking for a "throatier" sound, buy a V6 Altima; you'll never reproduce the sound of a V6 with a 4-banger. Installing a custom exhaust may make the car sound hillarious. If you are hell-bent on turning your car into a rice-rocket, there are some aftermarket exhaust systems popping up from manufacturers; they will deepen the sound of the exhaust, but the whiney sound will never go away.

To answer your question, the "whiney" sound is a combination of the alternator, and thrashing of engine internals at high speed. This is normal. The engine noise will deepen once the engine breaks-in, but it will always sound like a tin Japanese windup toy.
