Generally, if you can feel the scratch with your fingernail slid across it, it is too deep to polish out. Porter Cable 7424 with different levels of compound/polish multiple step machine buffing needed to remove surface scratches then micropolish to perfection and follow with polymer sealant/pure wax for long lasting protection {my project for this weekend}

Most tree sap can be removed by hand washing car with proper mitt. Stubborn dried on sap may need a little wd40 or other solvent{bug and tar remover, kerosene, etc} followed by rewaxing area as it will be stripped from the solvents

A "scratch" is an incursion into the finish. The only way to repair it is to refinsh that area.

Now if you are talking about Crayolas, that's different.

I am a big fan of a product by Kit Wax called "Scratch Out" because it's fairly gentle... good for surface scratch removal and getting rid of mild etching from water spots, bug splats, bird droppings, etc. That said, nothing works that well if the damage is much more than that. As an added bonus it's dirt cheap and available at Wal-Mart and most parts stores.

I haven't found too many products that work the way I'd like them to. For a ridiculous shine use "Diamond Gloss" it is a glaze for airplanes. Got it from a friend that worked at a detail shop; impressive. Also, for plastics, the Mother's Powerball works just as well as it wants. Worth the thirty bucks.

I was wondering do you have any tips or more info on removing tree sap and bird crap thats been in the paint for years, I can provide pics of course if needed.

I really need some help here because I want my car to shine.

Or if any one else has any info please feel free to respond.

The Turtle Wax brand used to offer a color-matching scratch and chip mask. It came with a crayon that you went over with the wax product, effectively covering the spot for a week or two.

Yes that. There's no permanent fix, unfortunately, for scratches that deep except touch-up paint and resurfacing.

If you hand wash your car, the turtle wax stuff will stick around for a couple months. If you go through automated washes, it comes off easily.

back when i was driving my 3000gt (a car that actually had nice paint) the driver side door got hit with a branch when i was on the freeway cuz it was really windy. me and my dad use m3 rubbing compound and it took the scratch completely away. its awesome stuff. but any of these scratch fixers will work as long as the scratch is superficial and still in the clear coat. if it goes into the paint your gonna have to get it professionally touched up.

How do I know if its in the paint, And will wet sanding get the clear coat off enought to clean the paint?

If I do remove the clear coat how do I put it back on?

I have heard the spray on clear coat sucks.

I assume you are talking about stains from bird****/sap that has been removed and has left etched marks into the finish {erosion} as compared to laying on top of the paint?

Etching from acids in rain/birdpoop/sap/battery acid/nuclear fallout/etc is very difficult to remove without compromising the remainder of the clearcoat as you basically have to remove {compound/wet sand/polish} away enough of the top clear coat to get down below past the depth of the stain....some stains may be shallow, others deep enough to require so much paint removal, there is nothing left. Wash the car and swing by a local profesional detailer who can examine your paint problems and give you expert advice on the possibilities of partial or total elimination of the problem areas. They will probobly start with a device to measure your current paint thickness. Go to http://www.autopia.org for a good carcare forum!

Thanks you very much, The trunk I can replace so that saves me so money, But the roof has some stains .

I will seek pro assitance but I will leave this to the bottom of the list becuase "knock on wood" as long as I wash it every week it won't get any worse.

But there is ALMOST never a solution in a bottle besides BG44K, Redline and possibly more.

Damn previous owners.

Just kidding.

and if you're talking about shallow scratches.....It's into the paint if you see white, unless you have a white Q then it's tough to see.

3M makes a whole line of good car care products and for $5-$10 you have nothing to lose. Give it a try. I have a tube of GS-27 scratch remover which has worked fine for superficial scratches.

I bought $100 worth of professional products [3M] just to clean up my swapped hood it took 4 hours of work to make it presentable.
