Just wondering how some of you have so much knowledge about cars. Is it by experience? reading? beating someone up for info?

so many places. screwing around with go-karts when I was younger, watching my dad work on his cars, reading (both here and elsewhere on the net, books too), foolin around with my friends on their cars..

this weekend I'll most likely be buying my first car (S13), so hopefully I'll be able to add "working on my own car" to that list ;)

Built WaveRunners when they first came out, worked on dirtbikes and four wheelers, worked on cars with my dad, apprenticed in a shop for five years, took auto in High School(was basically worthless and I just charged teachers for fixing their problems), Now I buy and sell cars and fix cars on the side while I am in school at GA Tech.

Well, being thati am only 15, in the beginning, when i was about 4-6, i just loved lowriders, and that was because of my bro, then 7-8 1/2 i was hardcore into domestics. Then, i saw it, the car that changed my life forever, a Mazda RX-7 (FD3S) with the 13b, with a body kit on it. Im asked my borhter what it was and then fell deeply into the world of imports. From then on, I boughts all of the import mags i could find, which, at the time, was scc and super street. I read and read till i could read no more. Eventually, 7th grade hit me, and know that i was fully beginning to understand what everything was, i read allot more. Of course, being about 12-13, i had no clue what a ricer was, still reading super street. Oh, and in between all of those years, my dad was there to help me learn something or teach m something about engines. Now im at 15, a young ripe age at which most males fall in love with cars, some just dont learn a much as others. Now, i know more than some adults will ever know. I can do all te basics, such as oil, tires, air pressure!?, boost controllers, and can install some aftermarket stuff into the engine and suspension. I owe the installing part to my dad and brother, oh yeah, i can drive a stckshift t the point where it feels like an automatic. At one point, for about a year or two, i knew way more than my brother and hated, cuz i could notask him qustions when my dad wasnt around. now he goes t an automotive technical school and knew as much as me in the first two weeks. Well, thats where i am up to now. Sorry for the punctuation and spelling mistakes.

Read, read, and read some more. Automotive class in high school helped me some but the best way I learned was by diving right in and doin things myself. If I came across a problem, I came to this site to get advice or help. And this site is a great place for that.

Reading is definetly the key, i have a really good friend and he has a 97 S14, a couple years ago i got into imports, then started researching the Silvia and all true JDM imports that are valued in japan for balance, handling, amoung other things...then made a Pack to myself that i would never be a part of the EvIL imports, the ricers and showcars, and i am currently building my S13 to kill my rivals...the EvIL Imports, and global dominations of course:D BTW: If Nico's doesn't forfill your reading needs every day, check out 240SXforums.com, and Zilvia.net too, hope this helps:D

Always went out and worked on our family cars with my dad. Tune ups, tire rotations, what ever he was doing. Then when i got into imports i just read alot.. I read as much as i can on nico, and i still learn more stuff daily. I always read as many import mags that i can get my hands on. My friends who tend to be a little older, always help me out with the labor part if i dont know what im doing. The best way to learn i think is actually doing it yourself. Even if you dont know what your doing, see if a friend can come over and not do the work, but kinda supervise and watch, and make sure you are doing it right. Ps. Hs automotive classes are funny. The class was so basic, but it was an easy a.

I apprenticed under Dr John for a long time at a local Nissan dealer and before that I got an A.S degree in Automotive Technology. And now I build and install GPS tracking terminals that operate through UHF, VHF conventional or trunked radio infrastructures.

went to auto trade school , read books and this forum.

Well i think the main word that nobody left out is, READ, and also do it yourself so you can understand it better.Don't just read magazine if you want to learn, read books~

you can't say that....you probably be learning and you dont even know it.

reading can't always help you understand everything. sometimes you have to dig in and do it yourself to understand it fully.

I am by no means claiming to have "so much knowledge". But what I do know has come mostly from being fearless when it comes to taking stuff apart. I was the little kid who took apart all his christmas presents then cried when i couldnt get them back together. When i was younger, i had a high school age brother that rebuilt his 70 impala in our driveway. I've always been into cars, and always will. The best way to learn is by doing, dont be afraid of screwing something up and if you do, then you'll remember how to do it the right way forever.

I am gonna sit in the parking lot a learn how to get fined for 101 stupid things. The first movie had every *** in the town racing through the lot, doing/attempting burnouts, and other useless acts. It ought to be a riot, my cousin is a state trooper and he informed me that they will be in plain cars after the movie. I think i mite enjoy wathcing this more than the movie itself!
