I've noticed that the initial estimation seems to have to do with the last tank, and now how you're actually driving. As you drive, it adjusts, but I spent an entire week in manual-shift mode in city driving, and the next tank tells me I'm only getting 260 miles out of my next tank. So I put it back into D, slowed down and spent the next week proving it wrong.
In practice, I usually get the needle to hover just above E at between 395 and 420, depending on how bored I get on the highway. And how many nice cars get bored around me.
And Jeff: +1 for Mothman reference. -1 for Richard Gere.
