not that easy... you gotta think about a new crank.. new rod.. new bearing(s)

crankshaft kit with bearings is ~$200 from the parts store... and I have a spare rod I can sell you cheap.

Well, if you can pull a motor yourself then you are all set. You would just have to strip the block down so it could be cleaned out from the metal shavings from the eaten up bearing. There's no 'machining' involved if you buy a crankshaft kit that comes with the bearings.

or you could pull the shortblock and drop it off at a machine shop and they would probably cut your crank and install smaller bearings...

wouldn't the bearings be larger if they turned his crank? but that's beside the point. depending on the severity of the rod knock and how long its been going on for there might be no damage, except the destroyed bearings. but then you still have to find out why they went out.

I still have some clevite under/over/whatever sized crank or rod bearings that I got on ebay by mistake (seller didn't specify they weren't normal size). Not sure which they are (crank/rod) off hand I'd have to go look later/tomarrow. I almost installed them but we're like "Hrrm, this REALLY doesn't fit at all.." look at box.. DOH

best bet is to pull the bottom end apart and have the crank inspected; either take it apart and just take in the crank or take the shortblock to a machine shop..

First things first. How long has it been knocking? If you just noticed and and shut it down right away, chances are that the crank is fine. All you'll have to do is get a set of new rod bearings (I'd do the mains while you're in there) and put them in. You could actually do it while the motor is in the car, but it'll be tough working around the sub-frame.

On the other hand, if you ran it like that for a while, you could be looking at some moderate bottom end work and I would take it to a maching shop.

If you are removing the crank and rod bearings, I was told that you would have to replace the oil pump because you would break it.

Is this true or just someone expressing their lack of confidence in my abilities?

heh well its not so much as true because you have to break it, but because often it's so stuck onto the block you can't get it off without breaking it..
