I was browsing through my classifieds and came across a relatively cheap 96' Maxima.

It is a 5spd manual, well maintained, but it says it has alot of highway miles, so I am guessing it will be atleast over 150k.

I drove a 2000 Maxima about a week ago, and I fell in love the the smooth ride, the fantastic acceleration and the wonderful 5spd transmission it was mated to.

The car took off like a bat out of hell, and it was definitely one of the better cars I have driven.

This 96' Maxima, I know is older and less powerful, but I heard that the 4th generation Maximas were better than the 5th generations in terms of reliability.

The car is being advertised for $2975, and he apparently put new tires on.

I just need a good, reliable daily driver car that will take 40-50 miles no problem each day.

I am in college, and if it needs a few stupid things then that's fine. I just want to know more about the VQ engines that come in these maximas. I heard they were bullet proof, what about the transmission?

Would it be a good idea to replace the clutch when I buy it, or consider anything rebuild.

I am hopefully going to take a closer look at the car today, and I will make a personal judgement.

DO HO KAY nevermind, that car I was talking about has 231k miles on it.

Still, its nice to know that Maximas can go on for that long.

If the body, interior, and suspension are in good shape, it may be worth thinking about swapping in a lower-mileage motor and trans.

You can check http://www.car-parts.com for motors and trannys in your area.

Don't know if it too late to chime in, but I own a 96 with auto trans and it has 388k on it. Runs like a charm.
