What is the real reason behind the 5 lug conversion? Is it just to be able to put the Z33 brakes on an S chassis or what?

Looks primarily. It's very easy to get large brakes and good offset wheels in 4 lug. 10 years ago, it was a different storyy and 5 lug was needed for a lot of good wheels and big brakes.

I did it for wheel selection and the ease of having rotors that just slap on with my z32 brakes.

Also because of my axle upgrade my only option for the back is 5 lug hubs.

Looks. The car doesn't need big honking brakes if you're DD'ing it. Heck, I never did huge brakes on my S13 over in Germany and I used to track it regularly (at least twice a month during spring/summer/fall).

4 lug just looks gross and screams econobox.
