what is another way to find top dead center on piston #1??

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

hi i hav a problem. my pully marks on my sohc ka are rusted and impossible to notice witch one is top dead center. i need to get my distributor timing. is there another way to find top dead center. i took off the valvve cover but i dont know how the cams are supose to look like all the way to the left or right. i took my cap off my distributor cranked the engine till the rotor was on cyl #! then put the coils in accordingly(cyl1-3-4-2). but car still wont start do i hav it 180 degrees off?

remove number spark plug and slowly drop in a (clean) flat head inside...and turn the pully...see were the screwdriver is the highest = TDC point

cams on cylinder one should point away from each other. thats what i find easiest to tell when it is at TDC
