I picked up an 89 (made 02/89) coupe with 94k miles on it. The car has been sitting for at least two years due to a problem with the AUTO transmission. I checked the compression this weekend (only removed one spark plug at a time and did not bring the car to operating temp. becuse of old gas). My results were between 145 and 150.

I should be able to get the parts to make it manual for about $300 minus a new clutch.

The big question right now is should I change all of the fluids and filter, put the manual transmission on and start with bolt-ons for boost or not?

that compression is pretty low to start adding boost.

You can't even begin to make this decision basedon those compression #s...all the plugs need to be pulled, it needs to be at operating temp, and the throttel at WOT - You know all that.

But I'd do it - Pull the auto, get it running N/A with a 5-speed, and boost it once you know the chassis is OK.

those compression numbers are inaccurate. do another compression test the correct way and then make a decision.

I plan to get the old gas out and do it the correct was this week.

With the 8.6:1 CR what are some acceptable numbers?

Well, I tested it tonight after warming the motor and removing the plugs. The results were the same.

Thanks for the reply. Is the range 142-192 for the 24E w/ 8.6:1? I was hoping that since the cylinders are even that they wouldn't be that far off.

Could it be from sitting so long? You'd think that w/ 94k it would be OK. (wishful thinking)

If it requires a rebuild I may just pull it and drop in a S...R... I was trying to get the hp up for less than $2500

192 is standard.142 is the minimum.

pour some oil into each cylinder. if this helps compression, then the rings are bad. if it stays the same, then you need to check you valves.

I'll pour some oil in and test it with a better checker. Do the pistons have flat tops? How much oil should I put in?
