has your engine got wet or anything? sometimes when you get water in the engine it causes belts to sqeel. Also i dont think it matters how many miles you got , because a belt can easily become loose or worn out.

I have a similar noise and a friend guessed it to be my starter. I could relate the noise to a wheel (like a wheel barrow wheel) on an axle that is much too small and if you spin it real fast it wobbles and makes noise but its higher pitched. It doesn't do it everytime, usually only when cranking after sitting for a while. I had to get a new battery and asked the schmo at autozone and he said starter too. My car has always been a little wonky about starting and replacing the battery made it better but i still think i need a new starter and autozone wants 125 for it :( Any ideas on a cheaper place?

Well, if you car has 35k on it and is a 97 you probably need to replace your belts. Do you know what a belt sounds like when it is slipping? Did your noise sound like that? Or was it more like dragon was saying? If so it would probably be the starter. Personally I would never buy anything more than oil at autozone because most of it fails out of the box or quickly. But their prices are usually some of the lowest un less you get a discount at NAPA :)

I have noticed it is worse in the cold weather. Its been in the 50s the last two days (whoo finally got away from freezing mark) and it doesn't do it near as often.
