ok so my 96' Q (non active) is acting a little weird lately.. it has been happening for a couple weeks now and i am hoping you guys can help me out weather this is something leading to serious (read: $$$) problems or if it is just some weird thing it does. sometimes, on occasion, (which could be a problem with fixing it because it happens at random and i cant get it to act like that on purpose) i will start accelerating from a stop and the spedometer stays at 0, and after maybe 10 seconds at the most it goes back up to the correct speed (say like 40mph), and acts like nothing happined. the rest of the gauges are fine. It doesnt bother me too much and i find it a little comical, i just hope it isnt real bad that its doing that. Also, to add to my confusion, it feels like when the spedometer goes weird, that the power steering dies too, only i dont think i am right saying the power steering stops working, because once i checked it by moving the wheels side by side while the spedo wasnt working and the RPM's still move up and down a little, which as i have been told means the power steering is still operating. the reason it seems like power steering stops working is that it is real hard to turn, like with old cars with no power steering. well anyhow thanks in advance -marty

The transmission mounted speed sensor feeds an integrated circuit [on rear of speedomter] that generates the 0-5 VDC for the speedometer and the power steering and the ecu and tcu............usually throws a MIL light unless it corrects itself fast!

Get a manual downloaded from http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/iinfiniti/ and all TSB in Adobe format. Look at the section that describes the speed sensor to diagnose it, and if found defective, repair. The steering is speed sensitive, so a faulty signal from your speed sensor could cause the effort to increase.

Q45tech gave you all the information you need to get started.

Note the voltage test point on the diagnostic connector where you can check the drive voltage to the steeering pressure solenoid. The manual has a nice graph showing voltage vs vehicle speed.

Sometimes the wiring to solenoid shorts [from hitting things] and burns out the steering pressure controller module. [the unit that translates the car speed into a signal that pulses the solenoid].
