Ok, today I was pretty board, so I decided to try something out. I thought I had read a couple of places that some people on here only wanted a CAI for just the sound. Well, I did a little test, and my intake is as loud as a car with a CAI. I will still be swapping mine out for a CAI soon, but I decided to do it anyway.

What I did is completely unnoticeable. You would have to pull the Battery out for somebody to see what you have done.

What I did was, remove the battery, then pulled out the main box that holds the Air filter. Then I cut a square section out of the battery side of the air filter box. The piece I cut out was about 5inchs wide, and 7inchs tall. Nothing on the air filter side, or IAT/MAF side was changed. The square I cut out, basically gives you a window to the dirty side of the air filter.

I drove close to 200 miles today after doing this, and since all modifications were done on the dirty side of the intake, nothing has changed at all.

I did floor it a couple times, and it gets pretty loud. Normal driving volume has not changed at all. Cruising is still dead silent, normal acceleration has BARLEY changed. If your radio is on, you wouldnt notice.

If I wanted too, I could take the square piece I cut off, and easily reattach it with some plastic weld, or whatever. But I think for now ill just leave it as is until I get a new intake.

On my way home, I did have to refill, so ill be able to check to see if for some odd reason my gas mileage changed for any reason. Since the Flooring to hear the sound is over with on the last tank of gas, this will give me an idea if anythings changed. I doubt anything has changed at all.

Either way, I hacked up my car, to see if my idea worked, so other people could possibly save money, on buying a mod, just for the sound.

Couldn't you get the same results if you cut the intake tube by the intake manifold, got a 3 inch rubber pipe coupling, got some stainless or not flexible tubing and a K&R filter on the end and running it down instead of paying $220. Granted this would cost maybe $40 tops and look like Joe Plumber but aren't we talking the same thing? Granted you might lose 1 horse because it's not mandrel bent but why wouldn't this work?

I could get pics, but Id have to pull it all back apart.

All of the tubing remains untouched, you wouldnt know I did this unless I told you, or pulled the battery out.

You did change something, and as such your MAS has overall changed its normal settings to cope. What you did was increase the overall incoming airspace to the filter, instead of the normal little opening to the air box. More air means more fuel which equals more power. The power might be negligable, but there is a good chance you used more fuel. There is nothing wrong with this type of modification, people have been doing it for years, on low buget rides. Still nothing wrong with that, everyone has to work with what they got. Anywho, if you really want an agressive note, the best way is to remove all the sound chambers. This are little boxs and cavitys along the intake track put there from factory to reduce the noise, only 18 percent of Owners like loud intake noise.

Only issue I see here is that instead of pulling cooler air from the front 'ram air' section, it is now pulling directly from the hot air of the engine bay, although it probably does allow more air in.

The only thing I could possibly think of, the opening on the box would catch a good amount of air that is traveling straight up the fire wall. I dont know if during driving if air is being pulled down, or pulled up in this location, but it is a straight shot to the ground with nothing in its way.

I did not due this mod, because I was broke, or didnt have money for an intake, I did it simply because I was board.

The Elantra had a mod where somebody claimed if you took out the sound deadening chamber on the filter system they got more power. It also made it louder. There is a lot of debate whether or not the stock air filter is any worse than say a K&A filter. Definitely sounds kooler.
