been super busy at the shop with fd and now east coast bash right around the corner...finishing up cars left and right!

i've started measuring out the shifters anticipated location and here is where i've gotten to so far.
Image
rb20 trans shifter location using a modified ka b&m shifter from yesteryear...i'll miss the notchy goodness.

Image
shifter lands approx 30" from the bellhousing edge based on measurements off of another 20 trans i have out of the car (with a b&m plate on it too).
as you can see the trans is significantly longer than the 20 trans (longest of the rb transmissions) and poses a placement problem for the shifter assembly.

the problem with the remote shifter assembly is that it HAS to have the universal joint due to the misalignment incurred with the actual shifting action...i thought about just mounting the shifter to the shaft and relocating the reverse lockout to be a 'pull up' style like the supra v160/v161 transmissions but it still doesnt solve the misalignment issue that will come into play once its all bolted together.

this is what i've come up with so far regarding the shifter, shortened up the connecting piece and managed another half an inch closer to the trans...
Image

might be able to locate the u-joint closer by drilling a new mount hole for the shifter u-joint on the trans shifter rod but still investigating alternate methods of locating the shifter.
waiting on my driveshaft yolk then i'll tear the car apart and mount it all up.

How much is the adapter? Since my 20 trans can't go into 5th gear I was thinking about picking up a RB25 trans but good lord that thing is solid fuking gold.

No idea on the adapter cost, I can find out monday.

Yolk came in so I decided to tear the car apart...
Figured out why the car had some god awful bearing noises, both the pilot bushing was destroyed as well as the throwout bearing, it looks like the pilot some how wriggled its way out some how and was binding on the input shaft... very bizarre and havent seen it happen before.

rb20 trans, be glad to get rid of your drippy grindy self...glad the previous owner forgot to fill it with gear oil before he drove it!

the z33 box is a MASSIVE gear box compared to previous nissan gearboxes, even a v160 is smaller than this unit.
several 'clearance spots' needed to be added to the car to allow for decent movement around the gear box, this was done by quite literally shoving the trans into the tunnel and wriggling it around so it hit the chassis and marked where things needed to be massaged.
This section of the trans tunnel needed to be removed completely for good clearance.

Trans mounted to the car, notice the size differences.

Modified trans shifter linkage assembly, still trying to figure out a better way to shorten the shifter assembly further.

Found out that the CSC hydraulic line assembly hits the trans tunnel and will require significant cutting to utilize it so I plan on cutting it up and most likely brazing on fittings and running some -an braided lines to the factory hardline and implementing a bleeder as well.
I'll have a driveshaft made up this week, and with any luck have the car driving again by the end of the week.

I have heard from CarlH that the production kits are available but I'd like to see some updates here. I also know there is someone else running this kit in their s13 chassis.

time to update this thread i suppose...back from the dead.
setup has been in the car for almost 40kmi now and its honestly perfect, the gear ratios match big turbos nicely so you almost never fall out of boost if you're shifting at redline.

what i dont have is pictures of the final shifter install as I ended up doglegging the shifter to get it back in center of the shift surround.
this unfortunately gives the shifter a bit of dive and rise depending on gear but the gearbox makes up for the minor inconvenience of this, when its in neutral it looks like a normal shifter.
if you're interested bother [email protected], we've done a few installs and it really is a fantastic transmission.

I'd also like a picture of the new shifter location.

you can use an rb clutch but this setup requires the jwt flywheel for proper clutch spacing and spline engagement.

shifter location is literally a 2" piece of flat stock welded onto a cut off shifter and then a bolt welded to that to bring it back up in the center of the shift hole.
I'll try to take a pic but its pretty simple.

yolo dude, just yolo it. lol
on the sr it requires substantially less cutting than what I had to do, only minor trimming of the rear section.

This is possibly an ignorant question, however why not just use an R34 GTR transmission with the transfer case cut and welded? I've seen that done several times in ER34 and S15 RWD RB26 swaps and it seems like it would be much less work.

unless its a r34 vspec 2 nur which has the v160 getrag all r34 cars were the normal 5 speed box.
good luck finding one of those transmissions for under 6k.

I'm in Japan so the situation is probably different overseas, but here's an R34 Getrag (missing the transfer case though) for around $1500, they're pretty common, just a bit expensive. http://page12.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/a ... p477981385

Sorry to dig this up but how did this all go? How well does this bolt into a skyline with regards to shifter location?
