I have done a KS replacement in a 97 I30 this weekend. It's much easier than the 99 I30 CA-config where KS access is almost impossible. In both cases, I didn't have to take out the plenum. I used a 12mm socket, universal joint, 16" extension and 3/8" ratchet drive + a special tool. Spray WD-40 or PB Blaster on the KS mounting bolt, let it sit for a while, before attempting to remove it. The mounting bolt is M8, 1.25mm pitch, 30mm deep with 12mm head. Use a 6-point socket (a 12-point socket may round the head of the bolt).
Check the KS resistance as it usually fails open. A good one reads @ 550K ohms (500-620 K-ohms). I bough an OEM KS, P/N: 22060-30P00 for $45 from DeutscheParts (this part is $140 or more at dealership). Avoid the cheap imitations.
Once I've loosened the mounting bolt, I used a special tool (my grandson with small hands) to remove the old one and install the new KS. Everything done in @ 30 minutes.
