I have an 09 versa that i drive mainly in the city.alot of stop and go,short trips and such.I am only getting right at 19 or 20 mpg's.seems a little low to me.What should i be getting and what should i start looking at to change out, like spark plugs and such.It has 54000 miles.

well first is your Versa a manual, auto or cvt model? If an auto or cvt you are due for a transmission fluid exchange. Have you changed the air filter recently?

How hard do you drive? if you keep it around 2200rpms while accelerating you get the better mileage, also coast when coming to red lights instead of braking late can improve your mileage.

In my experience with the Versa driving conservatively yields the mileage, I get 29-30 in city driving and 32-37mpg on the hwy.

your spark plugs should be good to go for another 51000 miles, but with the low mpg you say your getting it might be worth checking into.

I lost about 10% in mileage when I went from commuting a long distance of mostly highway miles to only shorter trips, but it's still over 30mpg. I have a CVT and don't accelerate harder than I need to, usually at the target rpm for the speed I'm going to be going. I don't use the A/C very much, living in the mountains, but even using it most of the time would only be about another 10% hit, not 33%. But the car (and every one I've ever owned) gets much better mileage in the summer, in any case. I do keep pretty close to the scheduled maintenance, also.
