I'm no Versa expert but engines are engines. You gotta isolate the sound to find out where it is coming from. If you can physically touch the injectors, put the metal end of a flat head screwdriver to them and the handle end to your ear. Injectors should be whirring when they are firing properly. If you hear the tapping noise right on beat through the screwdriver you've found your area of trouble. Repeat for other areas like the head, bottom end, etc so you can at least narrow down where the noise is coming from.

You must remember as well that these engines run a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt. The result is a little added engine noise, but no worries about timing belt replacement or being left stranded with a broken timing belt.... not a good time!

I didn't hear anything abnormal during that recording, but you have to understand that your cell phone cam is just about the lowest fidelity device you could possibly have recorded on.

Rather than waste your time trying to figure out a better way to record a more accurate sound clip, why don't you just go back to the Nissan dealer, have them fire up another one, and listen to ITS engine as a comparison?

Well have you been experiencing any other abnormal noises? Have you been getting a sudden drop in gas mileage? power?

I believe our MR18's have VVT right? It could be the VVT possibly or something as simple as the valves and lifters making normal tapping noises. I dont think our engines have rocker arm stoppers do they? If they do it can be those. It also can be the injectors functioning normally. Maybe on the next tank put in some fuel system cleaner.

When was you last oil change? What weight, type(synthetic, synth-blend,e.t.c.) and how many quarts? Check your oil to make sure its at its proper level.

That brings up another question. What total miles do you have? What kind of driving habits do you have? These all are a bunch of questions that need answers and can shed some light on your situation.

The easiest thing? Take it to the dealer and have them check it out.
