Since the temperature in Buffalo has dropped from 45F to 14F my valve train sounds a lot noisier on a cold start. When I changed to Mobil 1 a few weeks ago when it was warmer my previous small level of cold valve train noise all but disappeared. Now it is back with a vengence.

Is this to be expected with the drop in temperature?

I assume you are using 0-40W or 5-30W M1?

I have 10W 30 Mobil 1 in it. Is this not suitable for buffalo winter temperatures?

According to the owner's manual and Mobil 1's web site it should be fine down to 0F, but If you're not going to see above 60F for a while 5W-30 or 0W-30 might be preferable.

I notice some louder HLA (lifter) noise even on Q2 in the cold - I think some change is normal. Does your noise go away after warm-up?

yes it definately gets a lot quieter when the engine is fully warm, it was just a surprise to hear the difference over night as we had a temperature swing from 45-50F down to 12-15F

I suppose I am mainly concerned as to whether any damage is being done for the time period that the noise is at the higher level during the warm up phase

Sure damage is being done from every start up that's why engines don't last...........cold cranking with no oil pressure is the major wear procedure, otherwise most would last 1,000,000 miles or longer!

Other than a pressure preoiler and an engine heating system [to maintain 176F] the only thing you can do is select a 0-5W oil.

I use a 5w30 Mobil 1 in the winter [DEC-Feb/March] even in Atlanta as we saw 18F yesterday but it can reach 75F in the same week/period.
