The letters took the longest and were a real pain in the a.ss to do. I sanded everything down with a bench sander with a wire attachment until it was very smooth, and dremelled the letters/around the letters prior to painting. After I painted it, I let it dry for five days and then scraped the paint off of the letters, easier said than done. The letters were in rough shape, aluminum being very soft and the letters already corroded by 92k miles, so even after I got the paint off of the letters, the letters were still both unevenly surfaced, producing a light/dark look, and rough edged. I sanded them down with 320 grit sand paper, got fed up with the amount of time/little progress from the sandpaper, and went straight to a metal file which worked much better. After the metal file I went to a finer-grit metal file, and then sanded the letters again...I think it would have been easier to just paint them white!
