Its that bad, huh?

How could yall tell it there was CAstroil in there?

Here is what I plan on doing....

Just cleaning the ever living crud out of it. So far it has been suggested I use CArb cleaner and ATF. Are there solvents I should stay away from, ie; engine degreaser?

I am thinking I could plug the return drains and go in there with some serious patience, plenty of rags, a couple various brushes, carb cleaner, ATF, a couple improvised tools, and a shop vac with a modified nozzle. All the while keeping Q451990 picture in my head as motivation.

What do you guys think?

I worked on the valve cover yesterday for a combined 6 hours. It was amazingly dirty. I am still not done with all the nooks and crannys'.

Ofcourse, this is only to be done to what I can physically see. The oil galleries and other non human friendly confines of the engine are to be done by, or with the help of professionals, as maxnix has suggested.

Sounds a bit risky, but with enough care you can do it. What will you plug the drains with, and how will you ensure that you won't drop anything down into the oil pan? Shop vac might not be a good idea based on the cleaners you use. Some cleaners are pretty aggressive on plastics.

I think I may have messed up the vavle cover. It feels like some of the finish may have been taken off over night from this degreaser I was using. I went upstairs to take a break and fell asleep. I really didn't think anything of it, but I dumped it earlier and where it had collected you can definetly tell the difference. THe metal is not smooth or shiny at all coupled with a dark shade of grey. Dude, this train is wrecking! It is metal, right? It should work just the same?

Had the same problem using gasket remover on the valve covers. You must not have come across my 2 posts on the valve covers being painted and avoidance of solvents. It's a shame, cause the bare metal is downright ugly next to the factory finish. Functionally there is no difference between a painted cover and a bare one.
