I figured instead of making 2 threads I would just post one with both questions even thought they are completely unrelated.

Question 1. My friend has a GTI and he told me one day that when you down shift in a manual car if you just drop if to a gear (i.e. going from 6th to 4th) then let off the clutch slowly it can wear down your clutch.

So I asked my friend who knows alot about cars and he said that as long as your not pressing on the gas while your on the clutch then it wont wear down your clutch.

Im just wondering because I dont want to mess up my clutch from stupidity.

Question 2. What ever happened to the company that was supposed to be producing the intake manifold? I think it was dynotech or something. The last I heard he said he was releasing the manifold in 4 weeks and that was about 2 months ago.

Has anyone heard anything else?

Clutches wear down over time anyway. Other than brakes, and tires, they are one of the highest wear items on a manual transmission.

Now, the behavior you describe isn't particularly damaging unless, as your friend said, you have both the clutch AND the gas in at the same time.

The worst things to do to your clutch include:

BurnoutsRevving with the clutch PARTIALLY engaged (fully engaged or fully disengaged won't affect it much)Running with a leak in the clutch hydraulicsMaking a habit of disengaging your cruise control by using your clutch instead of your brake

To question #1, Every time you engage your clutch you cause wear to the disc. As long as your not slipping the clutch you should be fine. However, you should not shift through the gears without hitting every one in turn. Skipping a gear while down shifting can A: cause your synchros in your trans to come out of adjustment, which can cause gear grind. B: It is a very easy way to mis-shift your car. If your not paying attention you can cause your car to go from a lower to higher RPM very quickly, thus over reving your engine, which can cause a lot of damage. Contrary to what some people think, your rev limiter does not help you when down shifting, only acceleration.

Question #2 Find their screen name and see if they have an email in their profile. That's the easiest way to contact them!

I dont need to know that bad, I just wanted to know if anyone has heard anything. I dont have enough money to buy it even if it did come out when it was supposed too.

I'd be interested to see what they have to say and what type of price they'll be talking. If I really want one that bad tho, I'll just have my buddy tig weld one together. Looks pretty straight forward.

That depends on what is going on when you're downshifting. If you're using the downshift to engine brake then, yes, it'll wear on the clutch. If that's the case, look at it this way:You're using the engine to slow the car, which means the output side (transmission) of the clutch is going to be turning faster than the input side (engine). ANY time you engage the clutch partially when the two sides are rotating at different speeds, there's going to be slippage, which means accelerated wear. It's the same deal (just reversed) as if you were letting the clutch engage slowly while applying the throttle to prevent rolling back on a hill.

Obviously that's far from the only reason you'd be downshifting, though.

This is what he replied...

We have been busy designing intakes for the Yaris, Scion Xb and Xd. The Versa intake is done and we are going into production. We just need to get enough Versa owners interested. Richard

wasnt the price for that like 699 bucks ??? for just 19hp ??? isnt worth it... just for 19hp... now if it was like 50hp gain or some where in the mid 30`s then it just might be worth it...

$700 for a 15% power increase...A CAI is $200 for MAYBE a 4% power increase.It's about on par with other bolt-on mods...

Yeah I understand that, but with the headers and cat back coming out soon it would have been REALLY awesome to hear what a Versa sounds and preforms like with a full intake and full exhaust in it.

All of the members with cat-backs have custom jobs. Tyler_ofspain and Blind_snyper, in fact, have identical systems except for the tips.

Big burbly engines sound great with free-flowing exhausts. 4 and 6 cyl engines drone badly if you try to open them up too much.

Best exhaust system I ever had was actually on my Spectra. I had 2.25" pipe running through a Flowtech (Holley) Raptor muffler. However, I didn't want to cut the resonator out of the system altogether... and I didn't have the right size resonator available, so I used a Cherry Bomb in place of it. I wish I still had the clip of it... but it was a very nice system for the car.
