I am about to buy a SR T25, and the turbo is blown.

I just need someone who has experience in turbo rebuilding to tell me how hard replacing the shaft (or rather finding a new shaft) will be.

I always get the shaft in life, but I've never had to change one... yet...

If the shaft is gone, then the bearings are toast too. You would need to do a full rebuild. Expect to pay close to $300 for a full rebuild with balancing.

due to this balancing that is required its not recommended you do it yourself

Perhaps I could do some of the work myself, no?

I mean, I dont have to have the shop do everything do I? I can do seals and bearings in my own shop, the shaft and balancing could be handled by the professionals then...

Yes, but a standard rebuild kit is around $150.... then balancing will be about $50. So you might save ~$100 or so. Oh, and don't fall for one of those ebay rebuild kits... look into one from a company such as Forced Performance who is a licensed Garrett distributor.

$100 dollars saved is BIG to me.

Is the T25G different from most garrett turbos?

Kits I see on Ebay are for them, I cant really see where they would go wrong.Unless its one of those "quality of materials" deals...

T25 center sections are all the same so the seals and bearings work no matter what. And yes, it is a matter of quality when it comes to the parts. You are talking about a high-precision piece of equipment. That's why shops charge a lot for turbo rebuilding.

unless you're buying this blown turbo for $50 i wouldn't bother. even then it'd be tough

what choice do we all have when there is a budget anyway? A rebuild is going to have to happen to most SR turbos you find. I like the whole "bolt on" deal too.

I'll sell you my t25g for $150. Off my friend's low mileage blacktop S13 SR clip, and I used it for about a year let me know if you're interested because I just bought an s14 t28... very little shaft play and no oil on my IC piping or leaks. Boosts fine, made 180whp at 8 pounds just over a month ago

I bought a UK spec S14 bush bearing turbo from a guy on SXOC.com for $180 shipped from the UK. It has minimal shaft play but he mentioned it probably needs rebuilt. I bought an ebay rebuild kit with a total-seal gapless ring and I'll let everyone know how it goes when I get time to rebuild it. If you premark the shaft position versus the compressor wheel versus the nut on the end......you can put it back together without balancing (although it depends on how accurate you mark these points). I found some DIY turbo rebuild writeups written by folks who've done this and had success.........so I figure its worth a try. I've done enough successful mods to my car that a challenge like rebuilding a turbo is right up my alley.

anyways...

balancing is only $50... don't cheap out man I don't get some of you people.

*well lets see. I'll spend $200 on my turbo, and $100 on my rebuild kit, but F spending another $50 on having it all balanced so it doesn't take a crap on me!*

Ditto, unless they think their idea of fun is screwing with banjo bolts and oil lines, as they'll get good at changing out their turbo.

Never waste money on any used T25 that's busted. For a A few extra dollars I could've taken yours gotten it rebuilt and upgraded with bigger wheels.

Hmm......$50 isn't bad. I'm assuming any local big rig diesel shop could do this for me?

thanks,

Unless you live in Topeka Kansas, and then the local turbo Desiel place refuses to work on Gasoline turbines. So I get to take my turbo 70 miles away to Kansas City to have it worked on. Bastards...
