People has been telling me that if I go with the CA18DET motor I would have to rebuild it because it's so old. What i'm really trying to ask is, will i have to? And what are the negatives of the CA18DET? Getting parts and stuff like that?

Rebuild now or rebuild later. Pick whichever is easier for you.

IMO any of the motors will need a rebuild unless it's a two year old motor or something. I live here, Japanese people rag on their motors and the majority are never properly maintained. My wife's tired 16-year old CA18 can still chew on the back bumpers of average Skylines.

Well I got an automatic one and it seemed well maintained and so far runs like a champ!

Other than spark plugs and hoses, mine is stock from the factory.

I am starting to leak from my front and main seals, so this spring I may pull her and do a Felpro gasket kit and a new headgasket. That is a big might though

Unless you are plan on getting a rb26 I would keep the thought of a rebuild somewhere in your mind. Not to say that it is a definite that all these motors will break but I mean come on its a used motor that your purchasing from some1 you dont really know. Also if you are worried about the CA I would think you would worry about the SR as well, hell it is almost 2006.

i also have a ca that was in a auto car and i have done nothing to it yet.it still has strong compresion and runs great.i have put about 10,000 miles on it and i have drove it to 4 diff. states too.but im plaining on rebuilding it before i but the bigger turbo on it and run more then 10 psi.just for that fact that i know that its can handle the abuse im going to give it.

very rarely can you get an old motor and run the piss out of it. if you plan on modding it and racing it then it's definitely best to go with a full rebuild.
