Hey guys. I recently had some trouble with my truck stopping in traffic. Fixed the ignition coils, or one of em and now its doing it again. Drove for almost a week with no problems at all so im suspecting that its not the same problem again as it was pretty consistent before the fix.
I was driving down the road and slowing down to turn in to a gas station and the truck just switched off. No shuddering or anything, just dead. Restarted immediately after. Today it did the same thing, moving slow, accelerating and the engine just goes dead. truck restarted immediately after.
plz help. this ol' 720 is driving me crazy.

I suspect that this time it is carb/fuel delivery related. Mine has done the same thing irratically, but always starts back up right away. I still run the truck because I know I will need it soon to haul some stuff, so I really don't want it all apart. Soon however, I will rebuild the carb and adjust the valves.

So, for starters, next time it does it, jump out and see if you have fuel in the bowl.

Failing fuel pump maybe? Those are the symptoms.

just an odd question to go with the topic. I was workin under the hood and the air induction valve case is only held in place with one screw. so its hanging slightly open. could this cause intermittent engine stalling?

If it dies without any form of hesitation its usually an electrical problem. Try this for a day or two. Connect a wire directly from the battery to the positive side of both coils. Also do you have the fusible link on? If so temporarily by pass it by connecting the harness directly to the positive terminal.

sorry its been so long since i replied. computer caught a nasty virus. OK. still at the same place. havent had much time to put into repairing. I was kinda leaning towards an electrical issue. Just didnt seem likely to be fuel related.
My plans.
1. Going to replace the other ignition coil. Not sure if this could cause the problem, but its cheap and Ive already done one. (the coil that hasnt been replaced is the one mounted on the far drivers side. ((which is rough to get off with its placing under the relay mounted next to the cannister if I might add, especially with it being so old WD40 time))).
2. Going to go ahead and replace the relay. Have heard this truck has issues with these so gunna do it to rule it out.
3. If that doesnt solve the problem then ill be back here to moan about it.

On a side note.... There is a line going into the carb that has a V split in the end. Its still on, but can come off with the slightest of pulls.

Also I posted earlier about the air induction valve case not being mounted securely. Could one of these two issues be the problem?

Boatman, whats it cost to fly you out here to work on this bad boy lol. :rotfl

Thanks for the help!

Ok! Other ignition coil has been replaced, both are brand new! Had to remove the charcoal can housing and work on getting it off. WD40 didnt have anything on these screws. Some industrial solvent, locking vice grips, and a friend than can crush boulders with his hands, and an hour later we got it off. Truck started up well, drove it around the parking lot twice till it warmed up. No signs of hesitation and it didnt stall out. So far so good.

Will take it out for a better test drive when I have people awake to come get me if it wasnt the coils. Wish me luck. And as always thank you so much for your help and insight everyone.

If it isnt the coil then ill try relay next. Fingers crossed its fixed. :werd:

Walk with some 14 gauge wire, about 10 feet. If it stalls on the trial run connect the positive side of the coils to the battery and see if it helps. Also if the line with the split is long enough cut off the split and put it back on.

my 84 4x4 720 long bed does the same thing but mainly on bumpy dirt roads and sometimes fires rite back up also went threw 2 coils and still was only getting 1 of them to fire so i simply took some heavy gauge wire and bridged the two coils and did away with the factory's wires leading to the second coil runs perfect , as for the shutting off on or stalling out on bumpy roads , when it does it i pop the hood and wack the carb on the drivers side above the float / fuel window and she starts rite back up WTF need a ford sticker
