transmission problem?

i have an 89 240 with auto transmission and when you put it in gear it acts like it is in but it wont move just rev up. Its weird the idle drops down like it goes in gear it just wont move. I bought the car for 400 bucks so its no big deal if i have to put a transmission in it. But ive been reading some on this and i know there is a lot of sensors for it and i was just wondering if that might be the problem before i go buying another transmission.

check fluid level, mine did that same stuff after i did a build and i was 1-1/2 quart low and it wouldnt move. btw it looked over filled on the dipstick,but it wasnt, if that dont do it ,,,,, its shot.
