My 99 Q45 is leaking transmission fluid. It seems to be around the middle of the car (thats where its accumulating and then dripping down). I went to the local Infiniti dealer and asked them where it might be leaking. They said either the rear main seal, rear seal on the transmission or the transmission is cracked (the last one I am hoping is not the case). The only problem is they can't get my car in for 2-3 weeks and they are the only infiniti shop in town. I am going to take it to a local garage that I trust so that they can look at it. My question is how much am I expecting to pay to fix this problem? I'm looking at ball park figures here. Thanks.

Usually it is the turbine revolution sensor. This requires dropping the transmission, so have a new $10 rear main engine seal replaced at the same time for little if any extra labor charge.

Nissan rebuilt is about $2100US from Joe with a refundable core fee.

Look into my post (SEARCH) you will learn a bit more about TRS R+R. You don't have to R+I transmission! If you show print-out of my procedure, you'll end up spending max $200-300. Cheers!

How much does it usually cost to drop the transmission?

r/r on your transmission is 5.2 hrs. on book. try to get your rear main seal while you are at it. well worth the $$. you should see if you are leaking transmission fluid or engine oil. thus make sure you get original seals from the shop you are taking to. would not use after market brand on my rear main seal. might cost the shop less money but tell them you want original. would save you alot of dough. if it is engine oil try to see if your PCV valve might be clogged as well, repalce do not clean. PCV vales causes alot of leaks when not working propperly.

So I took it in for a quick look today. There was lots of transmission fluid down there. It is not leaking from the top (excludes the turbine sensor) nor is it leaking from the rear main seal nor from the pan nor the rear of the transmission. It appears to be leaking through the wires themselves. The wires have deterated and the fluid is actualy running through the rubber sheath and coming out the harness plug. He cleaned up the area today and told me to come back on Thursday to take another look.

It IS the turbine speed sensor--fluid leaks INTo the sensor and comes out the wires that run down the side

I just had my the gasket replaced on my 99 Q. It was over $200 though. I don't think it should have been that much. I mean, how hard is it to swap out a gasket during a trans flush? Flushes don't cost that much and the gaskets are only about 40 bucks.

This is true. Mine was leaking out the plug also. I followed it up to the turbine sensor right behind the bellhousing on the driver side up top. The sensor was cracked on the tip and fluid was leaking thru the tip, out the sensor and down thru the wiring sheath and out the connector.

I love it!That is the beauty of our profession (I am a Ford cert tech) when it comes to oil leaks! We (the mechanics) can blow smoke in customer's eyes w/o even blinking! Not all can pinpoint exact location of an oil leak. I've gotten bitten more that few times dealing with 7.3 DTI engines! The hardest part is to listnen to an experienced (former) Y33 owner and take a word for it!When new members join, we (seasoned) owners/mechanics knowing thing or two, ask to search for answers and in some cases trust us!We are not asking your (plural) money, we do it because we want to help others. But some just don't listen! It is frustrating you know!Cheers!

I talked to the Infiniti mechanic and asked him how much to replace the turbine sensor and he said in the 17years of being a transmission mechanic and he has never seen one leaking. So I don't even know what to think. One thing is for sure I am not taking my car to the Infiniti dealer to get them to work on the car.

Not yet. I don't think it is linked to the check engine light.

what harm is it to let it continue to leak? any, other than the few drops left in your driveway? not sure it is worth fixing, unless it causes some other damage I am not aware of?

I have no idea but the oil stains on the garage floor piss me off so I want it fixed.

Listen to farfetched, he's both a mechanic and hes fixed the exact problem you're having.

I would say that is more of a comment on his inexperience than his experiance. One of mine leaked at 32K and ATF was mechanically exchanged at 25K.

Your dealer has a "transmission mechanic?" How strange! Never heard of a dealer rebuilding an automatic.

Tell me what would you do if you oppened the hood of your car and found that something had exploded and covered evey inch of the engine compartment and engine with oil? That's what I've been dealing with as of yesterday and it will be my project comes Monday! And that is on a 99 E450 cab-chassis with 7.3 DTI!That's what I call LOTS of FUN! Cheers!

It turns out that before I bought the car they had changed the transmission fluid and over filled it by a substantial amount. The tech had to drain off a lot of fluid. The fluid was coming out the breather. They told me to keep an eye on it for the next couple of days just to be on the safe side.
