I had my fluid changed at the dealership at 67,000 kms and 135,000 kms. They changed both the pan filter and the external small filter. I was planning on tackling this myself this time and the car is at 190K kms. I was planning on just replacing the external filter. Is a pan drop really neccessary as the most important filter seems to be the small one on the side?

As long as they cleaned the pan out when they dropped it, I wouldn't bother repeating the drop. The infamous black gunk you get with the first pan drop is all break-in material from the F/R and TC clutches, and that reduces to almost nothing after the clutches are broken-in. If you have CVTz50 to monitor the temperature, it will tell you if and when the paper filter needs changing. They usually only clog if there's major metal in the system (which generally means the tran-ny is shot anyway), but because the paper filter goes straight out to the heat exchanger, you'll run hot fluid if it's clogged up. So if your temps are normal, just spill-and-fill and forget the filter, it's an unnecessary PITA.

PS - For the record, kudos to your dealership for being thorough, but Nissan doesn't recommend ever changing that paper element unless debris shows up in the heat exchanger. As mentioned above, that usually means a dead tran-ny anyway.

Awesome, thank you. As for the paper element I had requested it to be changed. I was unsure when the parts / service counter did not seem to know what filter I was talking about. The technician however did, and changed it.

Yeah, CVTz50 shows normal fluid temperature.

Thanks again Vstar.

I always did my drains hot so when I did a pan drop at around 60k, it was pretty much a waste of labor. Same goes for that PITA paper filter. My 2018 rogue now sets over 100k and runs just as well as the day I bought it. Of course I do change around 4qts every spring which I think means more than the filters.
