transmission probs

ok, tha problem is that the auto transmission wont shift right into the higer gears, it will manually shift into 1st and 2nd but not 3rd, 4th, or overdrive, rarely, is this a serious issue if the car has 140k miles on it or does it need to be serviced?

check and probably add some transmission fluid then give it an easy couple runs

I heard that those sensers sometimes go bad if not it's probably time for a new one.
