First off, I'd like to thank you all for allowing me to hang out here.

Ok, so my buddies & I were shooting the breeze 1 night & I mentioned that I'm getting a J30 to play with soon. One of them said, "Jeez, you just beat one of those with your Civic & now you want one?!?!?!?" I said, "Heck yeah!!! The Civic is awesome, but doesn't have the sexiness that the J has. I want show & go." The reply, "Don't they have weak trannies?"

"Yep, but I'm sure there's a way to beef it up instead of doing a swap. @ least, I hope so."

That's the question...is there a way to beef up the stock auto transmission without having to do a swap? I need to know what to do, especially since I'm going to be running nitrous when I do get it.

I think there's a way to firm up the shifts reworking the valve bodies.

BTW, you want to meet me on Friday and see your future car?

I'll be in Mobile for a meeting with my wife (and youngin) at like noon.

Valve body = firmer shift, clutch meshing is reducedLight weight torque converter = reduce drag, freeer reving engineTransmission Cooler = obviously, cooler operationAdditive = reduce fluid acidity and temperature with lubeguard red or BG ATC+

If you really want a bullet proof transmission, get a level 10 one. The above can only buy you a little more lifetime for the transmission.

level ten-http://www.levelten.com/index.html

IPT-http://www.importperformancetrans.com/

these are the only 2 companies i know of that can upgrade the J's transmission with optimal resuslts...take into consideration they arent cheap and in order for them to do a complete rebuild you have to drop your transmission and send it to them...turnaround time from what i was told by both companies would be roughly 2 weeks from your house to the shop and back...

Pour protien powder in your transmission fluid and make it do push-ups.

What part of Mobile will you all be in? & for how long are you staying?

I'd love to see the J; like to get a few ideas. I'll try to take an early lunch.

Level 10 transmission, huh? I'll do some research on it. I did hear about those, but I was a bit skeptical about them.

What would REALLY be cool is if there was a way that you could put a paddle-shift transmission in the J, similar to the ones in the Mitsubishi Evo X. That would pwn!!!

On another note, would it be pratical to swap in a G35 sportronic auto transmission? I just have crazy ideas, & I wonder if anyone has tried them or thought about them.

Level 10 Trannys are as good as they get without HUGE mods.Might consider a 5 speed manual from a 300zx TT

I was skeptical too & had crazy ideas as well till I saw the the price tag of the level 10 transmission...

"PTS Bullet Proof Transmission - $3998.00"

Umm... does that include the $1479.00 PTS Torque Converter Service?

The total of both of those together is $500 less than the KKB of my 1997 J30 with 109,000 miles in excellent condition & I just put $2000 of part & labor into it! (timing belt kit, plugs, fuel filter, tension rod bushings, TPS, 4 rotors + pads & 4 tires)

Next week it is idle air control valve cleaning ($37.50 labor) [currently throwing code P0505] , front struts, boots, mounts, rubber spring seat & springs ($800 parts $150 labor) not to mention my rack & pinion leaks also.

My point is that this car extremely expensive to maintain.

If you do not have anything better to do with your money then go for it.

Why not substitute the RE4R03A [300zxtt/Q45] for the 25% lower torque limited RE4R01A [stock 300zx NA].

It probably takes much less time to swap that to remove and do internals.

Hey, if it works.

BTW, I wonder if anybody tried to manually shift the auto trans. I brought it up once before, but that kinda got left hanging. I know it's pointless for drag racing, but I wonder if it would work for auto-x or road racing.

Sad to say, no one taught me how to drive a stick. I had to teach myself to bump shift an auto & use the sportshift on these newer cars.

I just finished looking @ the Level 10 trannies. They look impressive. Hehe, it'll give a J an edge over my Civic. Doesn't look like there's one out for an '07 LX yet.

No matter. If it can handle spray, then I'll look into it some more.

Plus its more about the driver than the car sometimes.

Do you really think a base model civic will outrun a j in either situation? lol The J handles better and throws down a good bit more power, even with a decent driver the J will win !!

More power with the J but a bunch more weight too. (More than 850 lbs more than the Civic.)

I just dug out the September 1992 issue of Car and Driver (Yes, I've subscribed for even longer than that.) where they tested ten $30,000 sedans. The J30 was one of them (finished 4th place).

They list the 0-60 time at 8.3 and the 1/4 mile at 16.5 and the skidpad at 0.78.

Car and Driver in this online article:

http://www.caranddriver.com/re....html

has the 06 Civic LX listed with a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds and the 1/4 mile at 16.1 and 0.81 on the skid pad.

So, (as much as I love my J) the Civic is faster to 60, faster in the 1/4 mile and it handles better than a J30 all as tested by Car and Driver.

You still think the J will win? (Unless it's not stock.)

If your J has a GREAT BIG HUGE WING on the trunk it would surely out run a Civic, maybe even the new Vettes if the wind was right.

Oh and I almost forgot, if you have 300 lbs of subs in the trunk to help keep the rear end even more planted to the road it would be no contest at all.

Thanks for calling my J rice. I wasnt trying to flame on the civic but i have driven almost every generation of civics and they all dont feel as fast as my J30. Im not calling the infiniti a rocketship but it definatly has the edge over a BASE model civic.

What part of my last post did you not read?

It WAS a base model Civic that they tested and it IS faster and handles better than a stock J30.

Butt dynos don't count for much.

hey now i wasnt trying to offend anyone...i may not have a wing on the back but i have had people call my J rice before...personally i dont care what they think...most of the time they dont know what theyre talking about anyways....however on paper it looks like the civic should win...truth be told im doubtful of that...

I have to agree with kbflip because J's VG can really give out a lot of power at top end. Specially, I have updated JWT cams (i think kbflip has them too) and upgraded ECU from Jason. My J have had some very good win against Civics on the street. No offece to civic drivers , just the facts.

I would think from a rolling start a stock J would pull away but from a standstill the Honda has quite an edge weight wise.

Nope. That's actually a catagory that Car and Driver tests. They call it a "street start 5-60 mph". The J did it in 8.9 seconds and the Civic did it in 8.6 seconds.
