So its about that time (time for new tires) and Im starting to compile information to make a decision. As many of yoy know I like to go on the beach in the warmer months and I take my Rogue on more "off road" adventures than it probably would admit to in that regard... Not many, but one or two lol... I also have the potential to see a lot of snow in the winter...

Just for kicks I started looking for All-Terrain tires in the stock 18" size. I figured an All-Terrain should make the already good snow performance better, and possobly even be better in the sand. I checked and found that there is one company that makes an All-Terrain is Yokohama. They make the Geolander AT-S...

Ive seen videos on Youtube of Foresters and even an XTrail with Geolander AT-S tires going nuts in sand and dirt... Im curious... Has anyone run those tires?

I looked up the specs and in the stock 225-55r18 size the OEM Dunlops weigh 29lbs each. The Yokohamas weigh the EXACT same in that size, so I at least dont have to worry about added unsprung weight.

What are your thoughts of such a tire on a Rogue?

I love the idea. I'd much rather run that type of tire myself, but the treadlife would concern me. Unfortunately they do not produce it in the size I need for a 2015 Rogue SL: 225/60-18. There really isn't much available in that size yet, but I won't need any new rubber for a couple years though. Maybe more options will be available at that time?
I really wish Nissan would have made the 18" wheels optional instead of STD on the SL trim. I would have preferred the 17"'s. Many more tire options for that 225/65-17 size.
I have ran Cooper Discoverer AT's on my Ranger. One of the best AT tires for snow I have ever used but, they don't make 'em in a size that will fit.

Yes I am on OEM tires. They are Dunlop Sport 7000 AS. I have 34k miles on them and its going to be time to change them soon. I do drive harder than the average driver though....

Have you thought about swapping out to 17" wheels for winter/off road and putting AT tires on those? Or maybe tring to find something in a 235/55?

I haven't really considered going -1 on a set of winter wheels yet. If I get that serious down the road, I'd prefer to go to down to 16" and get even more sidewall to use. It looks like both F & R brake rotors are small enough that there would be enough room. But our winters here really aren't severe enough to really NEED it. More of a want. Plus the Rogue is the wife's ride. I'd rather save that $ towards upgrading my truck in a few years.

Ordered them yesterday and they are going to arrive at the shop today... What sucks is the mechanic (guy who is working on my Jeep) says he is slammed this weekend but can probably install them on Monday. I dont want to wait until Monday lol...

I just got a set of 4, 225/55-18 Yokohama Geolander AT/S had to special order them, they've been on the wheels for about 250 miles, I really like them good road grip, fairly comfortable ride. not too noisy. got them for the same reason, crappy DC weather rain/snow/rain/sleet and plan on working some light off roading come spring, looking forward to that. tires ran me like 180 plus mounting/tpms kit, etc. getting about 22.5MPG with the winter gas. which isn't too bad, with the price of gas these days, it really don't matter. was was getting like 23.8 on my old worn dunlop's

These tire look like they mean business!

Here are my initial impressions:
-They smooth out ALOT of the vibrations and jarring nature over most bumps. More of a solid feel.
-They are quiet from what I can tell
-They allow for a bit more body roll it seems. It doesnt seem like my Rogue is as eager to fly around corners as much as it did with the OEMs...
-The straight line stability seems much improved. For the past week my Rogue (on OEM worn Dunlops) has been a b**** on the highway. Twitchy and loose feeling in the steering department. I have been having to fight the steering wheel to stay straight. Its not pulling, just wandery.

After these tires, on the drive home, it was much more composed. Still needed to make little corrections but much much better...

Im still planning on getting a new alignment in around a week or so, but so far they are fairing better than the OEMs in every department except on road handling... Which I can accept to an extent for better all-terrain traction and a smoother, more solid ride.

Put a few more miles on these tires today and I can say it is a much more pleasant driving experience on these NYC streets than the OE Dunlops! Some patches of pavement that I used to cringe at are so smooth feeling now in comparison. Great feeling in that regard.

I do find myself driving about 5-10 mph less than with the OE tires though. Which Im sure the general public appreciates... They just feel more like a cruising tire than a performance tire. They dont like to change direction as much as the OE tires and they produce a little more roll... But Ill take that as a tradeoff for the more civilized ride quality.

So I just drove in some very (apparently lol) slippery snowy conditions and I dont think I can convey with words how phenominal these tires were in the snow...

It was literally like the ground was dry. Rear wheel drive vehicles in some instances were spinning their wheels standing still or fishtailing trying to accelerate from a stop or red light and here I was taking off like a rocket with no wheel spin.

Stopping was a breeze too. Only once did the tires lock up coming up to a stop sign... All other times, there was no slip at all...

I found myself passing everyone on the highway without even trying. Just cruising.

You know on an unplowed or underplowed highway, when there are tire tracks in the lanes, but the diving lines of each lane and the centers of each lane have accumulated snow, and when you go to switch lanes, those parts of the lane try to pull the steering wheel out of your hand and you lose steering control for that split second because those wheels are slipping? That used to happen with my OEM Dunlops....

But today, it was essentially nonexistent. You could hear the snow being kicked up into the wheel wells and such, but that was the only indication that you were going over those sections.... The tires just ate it all up... I actually drove in the unplowed far right lane with no previous tire tracks and passed 2 Lexus RX's next to me, and I had NO tire slippage or surprises of any kind. Completely stable.

I am thoroughly impressed thus far.

I'm surprised by the snow performance. Off road tires are generally very bad in the snow: wrong tread, wrong width and wrong blend of compounds.

I dont know how true that is. Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs are awesome in the snow from what I read, and Cooper Discoverer AT3's arent too shabby either...

But these Geolanders are freaking awesome

I only drove so slow to basically "idle" through the snow and not use momentum, to test the true ability of these tires to not get stuck

Ok it's GOT TO BE OFFICIAL..... Ive OFFROADED my Rogue more than any other Rogue owner on the planet! You guys wont believe the adventure I found myself on tonight.

Remember the video I posted yesterday? Well today it was pretty warm out (around 40) and some ice melted and I decided to take another run through the field I did in that first video...

So I did. I pulled onto the snow covered field at the same place I did yesterday, and I drove clear across it (as can be seen in tonight's video), but when I got to the edge of the field, there was more than met the eye... One wheel dropped a few inches, and I didnt realize that Id soon find myself in what was at least a 1foot deep mini mud pit!

At one point I had to shovel a little ice and snow from the front of the vehicle, because the front bumper was buried (thank God I bought that shovel prior to the last snow storm), and I was able to get out. It probably would have been easier too if I aired down the tires a bit, but I am very very impressed with these tires to get me out of that!!!

At one point I even turned off the engine for a couple of minutes because the front end was so buried and I was kicking up so much mud that I was afraid to hydrolock the engine....

My poor Rogue! Lol

I was getting 16-17mpg with the OEM tires and Im getting the same with these. No big difference.
