Thanks for a great tutorial. I have the 86 720 4x4 and wonder if it would be a much bigger job for the 4x4. I suspect I have a fair amount of slop in the steering linkages.

Hello again.
I am always reading all of your threads and find them very useful.
I have a little play in the steering box. Like an inch or more when turning the steering wheel. Is there a way to tighten up the steering box? I see a few adjustment screws, but I don't know what is what.

Glad to hear my posts are helpful.
I have not messed with my steering box. Mine has some play as well. Things were worse until I rebuilt the front steering linkage. I suggest that you search salvage yards and buy one from an old 720. I am not sure if the 4WD and 2WD are the same or not. The trucks with PS will be different than those without. Anyway, just send the salvage steering box off for a rebuild. Then you won't have your truck out of commission as long. Good luck.

Thanks, I might have to do that, however I wanted to see if there was a adjusting feature before that. Is the maintenance manuals available somewhere on this site? Or do you have a copy?

Let me go see. I'll get out my 1984 FSM and see if they can be adjusted.

My FSM didn't have any adjustment instructions for the steering gear box. The only adjustment I saw was part of a rebuild to adjust preload.
If it is bad enough then just get a rebuilt gear box. I don't trust myself enough to attempt a rebuild.

Rockauto.com sells the power steering gear box and I think there are a few vendors who have you send yours in and they rebuild it and send it back. That's why I recommended getting one at a salvage yard and sending it to them. That way you can still drive your truck while they are rebuilding the one you sent them.
