In the past, I have heard from alot of people that when using a helical lsd, if you lose traction or have a wheel come off the ground, that you will blow your lsd. Having the knowledge of how a helical lsd works, this didn't make sense to me, so I sent a message to quaife inquiring what WOULD happen if this were to occur....this is their response:Quote »Thank you for your inquiry. In order for a helical torque-biasing diff to function correctly, both drive wheels must be on the ground. If one or both drive wheels become airborne, a helical diff will act just like an open differential. There must be about 15 lbs. of resistance in order for the Quaife to work properly.

I can't speak about the quality of other types of helical diffs, but a Quaife ATB diff would not break in the event that a wheel became airborne. It just would act like an open diff.[/quote]

if you never lost traction then a lsd would never be needed, kind of defeats the purpose. like saying it breaks the first time it's used.

I think you missed the point. Getting a wheel to go airborn is different than just losing traction. If you have both wheels on the ground then the quaife will be fine, unlike an open diff that will just light up one tire. If you were to put a wheel in the air then all power would go to that wheel until it landed, then the power would be split again.

Where this becomes questionable is when you put a wheel in the dirt. Will the Quaife have enough pressure on it to work? Or is there a chance that the Diff will turn into an open diff. and throw off the dynamics of the car in a turn?Though I doubt it will because 15 lbs is not that much.

If you put one wheel in the dirt at the same time you are worrying about throwing off the dynamics of the car, I would expect you are probably turning pretty hard, and if that is the case, then you are gonna spin anyway. I would think anyway.

I think he meant like in a rally on a dirt road. Those 300Z rims look better on the 240 than they do on the Z.
