The VG30E had a very common problem with exhaust manifold studs failing--which would lead to an audible exhaust leak. Cars with bad exhaust manifold seals will tick pretty loudly. Sometimes the ticking will disappear once the car warms up and components expand with heat, sealing the gap again. I'd say that's probably what you're hearing.

It's essentially harmless. My car has 250,000 miles on it and has probably had the problem since 60k miles. Since the studs require so much labor to replace, I've just left it alone.

its defiantly the exhaust if the studs have snapped, the vg30 manifolds were designed with the rear to ports molded together and the front one by its self, the front one heats up and twits, making it not seat flush agents the head. when this happens the car will make what sounds like a tapping noise that seems to come from within the valve cover. my 94 D21 suffered from this problem, it can be temporarily fixed with new studs and a new exhaust manifold gasket or permanently with headers. fyi a new manifold will do the same thing, (waste of money)

I agree that it is the studs as well. I do recommend to replace them if at all possible as the exhaust leaking will hurt your fuel economy however if you can't do it yourself it could be an expensive fix. If any of the studs broke off deep it could require getting them drilled which is an absolute pain.

I actually had a 91 GXE that was fine then one day started whistling. Sounded just like a turbo but faint. I even fooled a performance guy that does a lot of turbo setups. Drove off and he thought it was turbocharged. It eventually warped some more and did its normal tapping/putting noise which ended the fun.
